"I hired Troy-Bilt-Construction for my deck and custom porch project and I couldn't be more happier and pleased with the final product! Troy is a true perfectionist when it comes to his trade! They showed up everyday and worked very long hours until the project was completed! Troy was very helpful In helping me make some of the design decions that I wasn't sure about and always thinking about keeping the structural support part of the build in mind! I truly love my new deck with a beautiful custom screen porch using the ScreenEze system! The job site was cleaned up at the end of everyday and all trash was taking away at the end of job! I highly recommend anyone looking to have work done on their home to not hesitate calling Troy for their project! He was a true proffessional from start to finish! I already have other future projects in mind that T-B-C will diffently being doing for me! GREAT JOB!! /Thank you so much Troy!"

"Fantastic and professional. We have a small house and lost some of our gutters to a snow storm, so we decided to renovate the rest of our gutter system while repairing the damaged sections. Working with HGE was a refreshingly positive experience. All of their team members were courteous, straightforward, and responsive. The work took two days with a weather interruption in between, but communication was prompt which let us accommodate the weather. All in all, great company. I just wish they did fencing so I could hire them again."

"I was seeking repairs to a covered front porch: the tongue and groove floor was rotting in one section and the wooden railings were loose, peeling, and in some places rotten. Without coming out to view the porch, and basing his estimate on photos and measurements I sent, Fred Aldridge gave me an estimate for total replacement of the floor with decking and replacement of the railings with prefab vinyl. He was adamant that a rebuild/replacement and not a repair was what I needed. Indeed having priced repairs (and knowing for a fact I would have to repeat them within 5-10 years), I was convinced that his solution was better. The price he quoted was reasonable but the price I ended up paying was another 50% higher because of discoveries that took place as the project got going: Rotten struts, the need for braces, non standard railing dimensions, and rotten bases to a couple of the porch pillars. Rather than repair the pillars, he suggested replacement with vinyl preformed pillars. That alone really boosted the final price. The result is that I now have a gorgeous low maintenance porch that I shouldn’t have to worry about for 15-20 years. Mr. Aldridge and his crew truly know their business of building decks and porches. They are not into carpentry or preservation of existing architectural features, however!"

"Paolo is an amazing contractor. I'm usually pleased if a contractor is responsive, or honest, or creative. Paolo is all of the above and more. He did an amazing job of completely rebuilding our master bath. He had great ideas, was extremely patient and flexible and wasn't satisfied until we were. His craftsmanship is beyond reproach and his crew were wonderful to have around the house (especially his father who works with him). If you can get him on your schedule, I recommend him without any hesitation.."

"Josh Bond, the owner, is very dependable. His co. replaced all the flooring and top rails on our 16 x 35 deck and did an excellent job. They also painted the interior of our house plus the kitchen cabinets, hung several new light fixtures, installed new flooring in the kitchen and one of the baths and other misc. things."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

There are both temporary and permanent ways to enclose a carport. If you’re looking to enclose your carport for the winter, a canvas enclosure could do the trick. It won’t be as protective as a permanent structure, but it can offer some protection from elements like snow, rain, and wind. For a permanent enclosure, you can add extra walls, add a new vertical roof, or a lean-to addition on one side of the structure.

When deciding whether to use nails or screws for framing, the specific needs of the project must be taken into account. Nails have long been the go-to option for framing due to their affordability, ease of installation, and ability to withstand shear forces. They are perfect for structural framing projects where fast assembly is essential. In contrast, screws offer exceptional holding power and are particularly useful in situations requiring increased strength and resistance to pull-out forces. For projects that prioritize accuracy and long-lasting quality, screws may be the preferred option, though nails remain a dependable and efficient choice.

One of the most common house framing basics for decades has been using wood for the framing work. However, some framing contractors now suggest using steel frames. Steel is lightweight, resistant to fire, and resistant to moisture, all of which are areas where wood framing could cause problems. However, steel framing is more expensive than wood and limits your ability to insulate the home.

Begin by analyzing the blueprints and gathering the proper materials before framing a house. With the prep stages behind you, begin by framing the floor of a house on the newly set foundation. Exterior and interior walls come next, along with rough openings for doors and windows. Contractors will then add ceiling and roof rafters to finish things off.

To calculate the number of linear feet of baseboard you’ll need, measure the length of each wall of the room you’re installing them in as close to the floor as possible, rounding up to the next full linear foot. If it’s your first DIY molding job, having a few extra feet on hand for miscuts is a good idea.
