On Saturday afternoon we discovered, when the new dryer arrived, that the only way into my basement, where my laundry room is, was too small for the dryer. The delivery people said that they would return on Monday, so I would either need to hire a moving crew to move some very heavy furniture that blocked the upstairs route, or I would need to remove the sliding glass doors to the basement. I called Lowe’s, where I had purchased the doors, sixteen years ago. They said that popping them out shouldn’t be a difficult job, but that they did not do that, so I should hire a handyman. An hour and a half of calling handymen on two different online services, none of whom were working on Saturday afternoon, I found Jordan, who understood immediately why I needed such quick service. He said he was finishing up a job now that couldn’t be completed until Monday, so he could come right away. He was at my house in fifteen minutes. He was immediately able to get two of the three panels out, but the third seemed locked in place. He worked for an hour solid on that panel, took all the screws out, wiggled it, pounded on it, put WD40 on it, took photos of it and sent them to associates who might have more experience with such old doors, and never became frustrated or worried. The more challenging the problem, the more determined and calm and focused he became. It was clear he had my best interests at heart and a backpack of knowledgeable skills to bring to household problems. Finally, he determined that the old plastic the door was made of had fused with the plastic and metal strips around it and the only way to get it out would be to ruin it, so it would never go back in. I decided against that and realized I would need to hire a crew to move the furniture upstairs instead of buying new doors. Jordan was insistent that he not be paid for his time and expertise, since he had been unable to accomplish the task, but I paid him $75 for his determination and professionalism. I would definitely hire him for any future job. Thanks, Jordan!
