"We wanted the main waterline from house to street, and hot water heater replaced. After reading reviews, we chose Wisler Plumbing and Heating to do this work. Wisler reached out daily in advance to let us know who was coming to perform the work. Each employee we met was very professional, responsive, and diligent with their duties. Davey provided us with a quote for this work. Hats off to Matt for replacing the water heater! The waterline was a difficult project, due to the location. Adam and Wes did an outstanding job, excavating, replacing the water line, and for their work on restoring our yard. We will definitely use Wisler Plumbing and Heating again for any projects we may have in the future!"

"Chris, Luis and Travis were great! They were easy to reach and quick to visit us (despite our post-snowstorm driveway conditions). They all communicate well and ensure an understanding on both sides every step of the way. Travis and a colleague were both courteous while in our home and did a nice, clean install of a new water softener and sediment filter. We’re very happy with the service we received so highly recommend Plumbing Champions!"

"They rerouted my gas line, fixing the problem and I felt a lot more reassured that I was not going to have a spontaneous fire. The man was courteous, timely and helpful. I’d use them again. I don’t recall the price I paid but it was reasonable."

"RotoRooter has once again come through for me demonstrating HIGHLY Professional Customer Service. They were on time to replace a Hot Water Heater in the crawlspace. I inspected the area with them after the job was done. The quality of their work was as if it would be in a visible and high-traffic area of the kitchen where family members and guests. But this was done out of sight, in the crawlspace where only I would see it a few times a year when replacing the Whole House Filter. I am a VERY satisfied customer, and I COULD NOT BE HAPPIER WITH THEIR WORK! If you need a plumber for ANY plumbing issue that may arise in your house, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND RotoRooter!"

Small jobs welcome

"My water went out on a Thursday morning. I got Classic plumbing off of Angie’s list called them first thing when they opened. They had someone at my house by 11:30 that same day. It was decided that since my water pump was working intermittedly they would start work the next day since it would be an all day job. I was lucky and had water the rest of that day. They came the next day. Amazingly I got a call from the office advising me that they were gathering equipment and would be a half hour later. Never has anyone called me like that when later then expected. They just show up late! The office staff were wonderful. The crew came and worked all day long . This was a job where there were major obstacles and they never gave up. Worked till dark and could not work anymore. I needed not only a water pump but the electric wire to inside box was bad. Impossible to fix that day but were back on Sat morning and put a new wire from pump to inside so I would have water over the weekend. On Monday they were back and worked all day to bury wire and finish the job. They encountered multiple problems because my system was 35 years old. They were so nice and never complained . I thought for the work they did the price was really fair. Worked 2 and a half days. I paid $5450.00. Got new pump new casing new electric boxes switches wire and they worked hard for 2 and one half days. I thought it was more than fair. They gave me discount for Angie’s list which other Plummer companies did not offer. I will need a hot water heater in the future and definitely will get them to do."

Water Heaters questions, answered by experts

While a water heater explosion is rare, it is a serious danger. Be aware of these critical warning signs:

  • Sulfur or Rotten Egg Smell: This is a major red flag, especially for gas water heaters. It can indicate a gas leak, which could ignite and cause an explosion.

  • Leaking Pressure Valve: If the temperature and pressure (T&P) relief valve is leaking, it may not be able to properly regulate internal pressure, creating a risk of bursting.

  • Shaking or Rumbling: Loud rumbling or shaking from the tank can be a sign of extreme pressure buildup.

  • Excessive Heat: If the exterior of the water heater feels unusually hot to the touch, the unit may be overheating dangerously.

  • Rust-Colored Water: This can be a symptom of severe internal corrosion that compromises the tank's integrity.

If you notice any of these signs, especially a gas smell, you must act immediately. Shut off the gas supply to the water heater and call a professional plumber right away to prevent a potential disaster.

The chemicals in a water softener can wear down the anode rod in the heater and shorten its life span. However, for most people, the benefits of the softener outweigh this potential drawback.

Have a plumber inspect the anode rod annually for damage, as replacing the anode rod is far less expensive than replacing the entire water heater.

If your gas water heater is over 20 years old, it should be replaced. Gas water heaters can last up to 12 years and while they can exceed this expectancy if well-maintained, a heater that's 20 years old would require replacement. The heater is unlikely to run as efficiently as a new model and could be more expensive to do so.

The standard copper wire gauge to use with any 30-amp circuit is a 10-gauge wire. The National Electric Code specifies a 10-gauge wire with appliances like water heaters running on 30 amps. If you try to use a smaller gauge wire, such as a 12 gauge, with a 30-amp breaker, you run the risk of the wire overheating and melting or causing a fire. Because of the safety hazards, the gauge of the wire is not an area to try to cut costs when connecting a 30-amp breaker to a water heater.

The size needed for your expansion tank is determined by the size of your home's water heater. Expansion tanks are available in 2-gallon and 4.5-gallon sizes. A 2-gallon tank will be appropriate for water heaters up to 50 gallons. An adequately sized tank should have a volume that equals 2% to 5% of the water volume within the system. A plumber can evaluate your home's water pressure, water heater size, and other factors to provide suggestions for picking out the best expansion tank.
