"I was extremely impressed with the very fine service I recieved from J.E.S. Foundation Repair, Salem, Va. They installed a French drain behind my house and across a portion of my yard in Oct. 2021. They were very professional and courteous from the rep they sent to assess the situation to the very efficient appointment updates as to when they would start the job. The crew called ahead when they were on the way and arrived right on time and also finished the job on time. "There was some confusion initially in setting up service, as the person I spoke with on the phone had her days mixed up. She apologized, as did another person in a follow-up call, so that was appreciated--mistakes do happen. Ostrom sent out two men who diagnosed and repaired the issue we were having with our sump pump. The price was high, and there was no breakdown of that price, so we couldn't really figure out why it was so high. But we had a hard time finding a plumber who actually services our area and they did fix the problem fairly quickly, so all in all we were pleased and would likely call Ostrom if we have any future plumbing issues."

Small jobs welcome

"Issue: water backed up in laundry room floor and downstairs bathroom commode bubbling noise when two showers were running at the same time. Anthony performed a drain vision procedure determined the possible need to replace pipes due to age, the dirt settling, small roots, grease, soap, garbage disposal, etc. A second test by Jason via drain vision for further analysis. No obstruction however, determined narrowing could continue to be an issue over time. Both Anthony and Jason are very knowledgeable."

Drain Pipe Installation questions, answered by experts

On average, a plumber will take 30 minutes to two hours to clear a clogged drain. If the clog is located close to the drain or an access point and isn’t severe, the project will take about half an hour. If the clog is deep within your plumbing system or is a severe blockage, it can take two or more hours to remove the clog. For this reason, main line clogs tend to take longer, usually between two and three hours.

The P-trap (or S-trap in older homes) under your shower is designed to prevent sewer gas from coming back up, so you shouldn’t normally experience foul odors coming from your shower drain. If you do, the vent stack that introduces air into your plumbing system may be clogged, or you may have a more severe sewer main blockage. In either case, hire a plumber to fix the issue for you.

A bit of water in the bowl can help unclog a toilet, especially if you're using a plunger. However, if the bowl is full to the brim, you'll need to strap on gloves and remove some of the wastewater in a cup or container so it doesn't overflow when you try to unblock the pipe. If you're concerned about it filling further, manually close the flapper in the toilet tank or turn off the water supply to the toilet.

Vinegar is better for an AC drain line because it’s less corrosive and won’t damage the pipes. It’s also a safer and easier product to use. Bleach should not be used on your AC drain line because it can corrode your pipes and harm the evaporator coil in your air conditioner.

There are several ways to tell if your gutter downspout drain is backed up. The most obvious sign is when you see water flowing over your gutter edges. This can occur during everything from light rain to a rainstorm. Additional signs can include peeling paint around your downspout, visible dirt around your downspout, and moisture on the side of the house. If you're having ongoing problems with clogs caused by a poorly designed or worn-out gutter system, consider getting a quote for gutter replacement cost.
