"We called Jimmy Perry, owner, and his wife was quick to respond while he was out on another call. They fixed us up in two visits: The first to get the burst pipe sealed and assess the situation, and the second to replace the heater. The Perrys (both of whom provide plumbing services) explained our options and the pros and cons of each. We opted for a conventional 80-gallon electric tanked heater, which Jimmy procured quickly, picked up himself and delivered/installed swiftly--within a couple of days. At the same time, he repaired a leaky main water valve and replaced a cartridge to fix a leaky Moen  kitchen faucet. All of this cost us $950, which I note was about half  the cost of a comparable heater we installed when we sold our home last year in the Washington, DC area, and about $200 less than another quote we got from a different local plumber, whom we did not use because we caught him making patently false claims in explaining what had to get done.
The Perrys rmoved all trash and container material when they were done, policed the area, and placed belongings carefully back in the basement after moving them out of the way to make room f or the new tank. They explained what they were doing and planning at each step and were as polite and as friendly as old friends.
We recomend Fluvanna Plumbing as highly as possible and without reservation. This is the third time they performed plumbing services for us and showed a consistent track record.

"Jamie did a fantastic job. Came out the day we called him to see what needed to be done.  The next day he and his associate had the new hot water tank in quickly and efficiently. Spent time showing us how the new hot water tank worked and answered all of our questions. Would definitely recommend Smith Plumbing!

Water Softeners questions, answered by experts

No. You should never directly drain a water softener into a sewer cleanout. This practice is illegal in many areas because it could allow raw sewage to get into your drinking water and make you seriously ill. Many places have codes requiring a specific seal, pipe, and a large air gap between a water softener and a sewage cleanout. Check out Florida's Plumbing Building Code as an example of what these restrictions might look like.

A water softener is a worthwhile investment if you live in an area with hard water. While hard water is safe to drink, it contains minerals like calcium and magnesium that can cause significant problems over time. These minerals build up inside pipes, reducing water flow and eventually corroding the plumbing system, which can lead to leaks and a shortened lifespan. Hard water also damages fixtures and appliances, potentially resulting in costly repairs. Additionally, it makes soaps and detergents less effective, meaning you'll use more product to get things clean. By installing a water softener, you can prevent these issues. The initial investment is often recouped through long-term savings, including lower energy bills, reduced appliance and plumbing maintenance, and spending less on soap and cleaning supplies. Other benefits include cleaner linens, dishes, and clothing, as well as softer water that is gentler on your skin and hair. In some areas, a water softener can also increase your home's value, making it a valuable long-term investment.

To get utilities set up on a property, you first have to contact the local department of planning to determine whether your property is able to connect to public utilities. From there, you can work with a structural engineer and/or a building contractor to design the layout of utility lines on the property. The pros will need this information as they begin securing building permits before they can start adding lines.

If your property isn’t able to connect to public utilities, you’ll need to consider working with pros to develop a comfortable off-grid home that will meet your needs.

Routine maintenance involves recharging the resin bed with salt or potassium, cleaning components, and periodic inspection.

It’s unlikely that hard water on its own could cause substantial hair loss or damage, though it’s true that bathing in hard water can cause your scalp to feel itchy or flaky and might dull your hair’s natural shine. Using high-quality shampoo and conditioner or buying a whole-home water softener can decrease these issues.
