Generally, you’ll want to avoid pruning more than 25% of the tree’s canopy at one time. While pruning your tree is important, it’s possible to do it too often or to go too far. A tree growing close to a house can cause problems, but cutting it down isn’t always the best solution. Trees planted close to your home could damage your foundation as their roots grow. Transplanting a palm tree is a similar process except for a couple of important differences. First, their root ball doesn’t need to be as large as a “true” tree, which makes them a bit easier to dig up and move around. Second, they struggle more with taking root and staying upright in a new location, so it’s important to give them extra support when staking. 

Some signs that a tree needs to be cut down and removed include:

  • There’s visible damage to the trunk or branches.

  • The tree is leaning significantly.

  • It’s growing too close to a house, power lines, or other structures.

  • The tree has a pest infestation.

In extreme cases, cutting a tree’s roots can cause it to eventually fall if the roots that were trimmed affect the tree’s structure and stability. If you make severe cuts to roots that are more than 2 inches in diameter, you run the risk of affecting the tree’s water flow as well as its ability to withstand severe winds or storms that could cause it to fall.
