He texted me to keep me informed along the way which I appreciated. What I like about Corey is that he’s an honest, straightforward guy. Tree work is notoriously expensive as home/landscape expenses go, and he gets it - he won’t try to sell you something you don’t need or pressure you into having more work done than is necessary. Generally, no, tree topping isn’t a good technique, and you should avoid using it in most cases. Tree topping may be the only good option to save a tree following severe damage after a storm, but in most other cases, it’s not the right choice. Tree topping can leave trees vulnerable to disease and further damage, and most pros will suggest against it.

After a big storm, you may not be sure if a tree was struck or not. Look for the telltale long scars, like strips or gouges in the bark of the tree, running in sometimes jagged lines down the length of the trunk. These scars will often show vulnerable living wood inside the tree. It’s also common to see scorched or wilted leaves on the side or top of the tree where lightning struck.

Using vinegar to kill tree roots is just one of the clever ways to use vinegar around the house. The method works best when you apply vinegar as directly to the root system as possible. For example, if the old tree roots and stump are currently exposed, drill holes in the tops of the roots and pour undiluted white vinegar into the holes to soak into the plant. Remember that vinegar can kill the surrounding grass and plants should it pour over the edge.

It depends on whether easiest means fastest or least challenging. If you have limited tools or experience, hollowing with a chisel and hammer is the easiest, although it won’t be the fastest approach. Using a chainsaw is much faster, but it comes with more safety risks, especially if you aren’t used to wielding one.

Generally, avoid trimming trees in the summer (with the exception of pruning fruit trees as needed). Trees use a lot of energy in the summer, most of which is relegated to new growth. If you chop it too early, you could stunt the next season's growth. Again, when in doubt, do some research based on the specific tree type.
