"First of all, I love the final product. I initially selected Tosh because Thomas said he'd done this type of project before. However, he didn't talk to me about changes in the supplies and money charges along the way. He hit me with a lot of additional money on the last day, that was way over the estimate he gave me. After we settled on the final bill and he said he would send me an invoice marked paid in full, he contacted me the next day and asked for even more money for additional charges. With the dimensions and diagram I gave him at the start, I feel he had enough information to accurately predict the supplies he would need and include that in the estimate. I would have gladly worked with him on making modifications to stay within my budget if he would have only asked me. Very disappointed in that aspect of this project."

"James did a fantastic job on our deck. We needed to install new posts, as the old ones were not to code and beginning to deteriorate. It was the hottest day of the summer and all new posts were installed by early afternoon, and the deck above was raised a few inches back into level. The next day, tongue and groove, and new lighting was installed below the joists. The place looks like a million bucks. James was efficient, pleasant, and knew what he was doing. I would highly recommend green mountain to anyone looking to have work done on their home."

"Zac was excellent to work with and did great work. We had him install a black aluminum picket fence in our yard. The price was great and quality is excellent. He was very responsive to questions and concerns when they came up a couple of times. I would highly recommend to anyone looking to have a fence installed in the greater Lynchburg area."

Fencing questions, answered by experts

For Bedford families, select fencing with smooth, splinter-free surfaces and a minimum height of 6 feet for privacy and safety. Install self-closing, childproof gate latches and consider adding barriers below the fence to prevent pets from digging out. If you have a pool, ensure your fence meets VA’s 4-foot minimum height and includes self-latching gates. Secure fencing also helps keep pets safe from local wildlife like deer and coyotes.

Helpful?

In Bedford, homes on steep slopes or with rocky soil often face installation challenges. Look for retaining walls, mature trees, or drainage ditches along your planned fence line. Be aware of utility easements, septic tanks, and shared driveways, which are common in rural neighborhoods. If your property is historic or agricultural, additional planning may be needed to comply with unique restrictions or preserve original features.

Helpful?

In Bedford, backyard fences and pool enclosures near areas like Smith Mountain Lake often require the most upkeep due to weather exposure and frequent use. Gates, fence posts at corners, and lower sections near drainage paths are especially prone to wear. Rural properties may need regular repairs to livestock fencing, while homes in the Centertown historic district may require period-appropriate materials for curb appeal and compliance.

Helpful?

Begin by checking if your fence installation requires a permit in Bedford, especially for fences taller than 6 feet or those in commercial zones. Mark your property lines carefully and review any HOA guidelines that may apply. Since Bedford’s landscape includes hills and rocky areas, plan for specialized equipment and allow extra time for digging. Scheduling your project in spring or fall helps avoid weather delays and ensures better working conditions.

Helpful?

Bedford’s humid subtropical climate brings heavy rainfall, humidity, and seasonal temperature swings, which can lead to wood rot, rust, and shifting fence posts. Spring and fall are ideal for fence installation, as the ground is easier to work and weather is milder. To extend your fence’s lifespan, choose pressure-treated wood, UV-resistant vinyl, or powder-coated metal, all of which handle Bedford’s climate and weather extremes effectively.
