"Jim and his crew were awesome! When Jim came to my home to see what I wanted done and to give me a quote, he was very clear in showing me how he would prune my trees and lilacs. I appreciated understanding how the work would be done. In addition they dug up three lilacs and hauled everything away, including getting all the leaves that were there before doing the work. The trees are leafing out and look beautiful. His price was competitive and he is very personable. I would definitely hire him again!"

"The guys were amazing! Respectful, clean, and quick. They scraped out the entire backyard in two days, and laid sod in one. We've had this same company do tree removal and sprinkler work in the past. We'll always use SLC Landscaping."

"Jose Ponce was easy to work with, and he got the job done well. He has many skills that helped beautify my yard. He cut down several trees and shrubs blocking a home, cleaned out dead wood, and installed two new gates at the sides of the home. I appreciated his pictures. After day one, his communication lapsed, and he wasn?t at the home as expected. He always answered when I texted, and the job took a little longer than expected. My front yard looks nicer, and I will call Jose again."

Arborists questions, answered by experts

A chainsaw is the best tool to cut down a tree, but you may also use a handsaw or ax. You may also want to use a lopper or pole saw to remove limbs before cutting down the tree. Wear chainsaw chaps and protective gear, including eyewear and earplugs if you use a chainsaw. Again, if you’re unsure about how to use this tool, this project may be one to skip.

Large, established tree branches won’t grow roots, but if you find a young tree branch that’s less than about a year old, you’ve got a shot. Put it in water or soil as soon as possible for best results. You’ll know the branch is viable if it’s about the thickness of a pencil and has some leaves or needles.

Finding a reliable arborist starts with researching specialists in your area and checking their licensing and certifications. Use online resources like the Better Business Bureau (BBB) to conduct research on each company. Next, contact the arborist and ask the following questions to see whether they are the right fit for your project:

  • Do you handle or specialize in dealing with the issue I’m having?

  • Are you fully insured?

  • Do you have customer references I can call?

  • Do you have any third-party certifications?

  • What equipment and strategies do you plan to use?

Most trees can be successfully transplanted while they are young, but pines, walnuts, and some oak tree varieties are more difficult to move because their root systems grow deeper than most other trees. Also, trees adapted to sandy soil with wide root systems like beeches, willows, and aspens are harder to dig out because their roots spread much farther out from the trunk. In these cases, unless the trees are very young and small, it’s a good idea to consult a tree planting professional.

Horticulturist is a broad term for any type of plant and soil expert. An arborist, meanwhile, specializes in all aspects of tree care. You should hire an arborist when you need assistance with tree-related tasks, such as pruning large trees, removing trees, diagnosing a sick tree, or emergency tree services. Horticulturists aren’t qualified to handle those types of tasks.
