"Erie Homes was great. Ty and Chris shared the information about roofs in a clear and precise way. I love the high quality of the roofing materials and the standards they hold their workers to when placing the roof. Mike called me each step of the way, so I was prepared when the roofing supplies showed up. I even got calls after the beautiful roof was done. Amazing job!"

"John inpected our roof for hail damage from a recent storm. He was able to work with our insurance company to get full roof replacement coverage. John and his crew were prompt, courteous and professional. Unlike other contactors, John was up on the roof working with and supervising his crew. Job site cleaned up very well."

"Skyline Roof Proâ s did great work, they showed up when promised and got the work completed on time. They built a roof over my 10â x 40â deck and tied it into the roof in one week from start to finish. They are easy to contact and quick to return calls if they canâ t answer. They took the time to clean up the area afterwards, picked up little bits and pieces of metal, wood, nails and screws out of the grass at the completion of their work, and picked all the screws, nails, rocks, and debris out from between the deck planks, then ran a magnet around the area to ensure it was all up, a lot of contractors donâ t do all that much clean up afterwards. If I had it to do over, Iâ d easily choose them again."

Roofing questions, answered by experts

The best material for your shed roof depends on your budget and personal preferences. For instance, if you’re looking for the most cost-effective option, rolled roofing is your best bet. Just be aware that it only lasts for five to eight years. If you prefer something with a longer life span (and you’re willing to pay for that durability), consider slate shingles, which can last for hundreds of years.

The lifespan of a torch down roof depends on the number of layers installed. A single-ply system typically lasts between 10 and 15 years, while a multi-layer system with two or three layers can last from 15 to 25 years. Although a multi-layer option may be more expensive upfront, it provides a longer service life. Warranties often reflect this, with about 12 years for a one-ply system and 15 years for a two-ply system. For context, this lifespan is shorter than other common roofing materials like wood or asphalt shingles, which typically last 20 to 30 years, with high-quality versions lasting up to 50 years.

When installed and maintained properly, a cedar shake roof should last up to 60 years. Severe weather and high winds will damage your roof, reducing its life span. Expect a shorter life span if the roofer didn't use top-grade material, didn’t have cedar shake expertise, didn’t create the proper ventilation, or didn’t use the correct fasteners. Keeping up with maintenance will help it last longer. It’s also a good idea to get roof inspections on a regular basis to help spot repairs before they become major issues.

Winter is the least expensive time of year to replace a roof due to decreased demand. However, it’s not an ideal time to replace your roof, as there are numerous factors that can inhibit the work, including shorter days, snow and ice, and cold temperatures.

EPDM roofing is a single-ply roofing material made of rubber, and a professional will install it in a single sheet and seal the seams. Built-up roofing (BUR) consists of multiple layers made from asphalt, adhesives, and roofing felt. A professional will construct the layers of BUR on-site. EPDM is easier to repair and has better resistance to extreme temperatures, while BUR is more fire-resistant and affordable.
