Wood putty is a great tool for fixing a hole in a door, especially if you’re working with stained wood or if the hole is relatively small. If you have a stained door, make sure to match the putty to the color of your door. Otherwise, it will be obvious that there was once a hole there. To fix larger holes in a door, you might need spray foam to fill the void and apply wood putty on top (to avoid using a large amount of putty).

You may be able to repair a door closer, but often, it’s easier (and more cost-effective) to simply replace it. You may want to try fixing a door closer if the rod gets bent out of shape. If that happens, you can simply straighten it back into position. Using a flat, durable surface, line up the bent rod so the bend is pointing up. Then strike the bent rod with a rubber mallet, slowly pounding it back into place. If you can’t fix the closer, buying a new one is still a quick and inexpensive fix.

Most of the time, constant use will loosen the mounting screws on your doorknob and cause it to loosen away from the door. While this can be annoying, the solution is quick and simple. If you have exposed mounting bolts, simply tighten them with a screwdriver, being sure not to overtighten and bind up the turning mechanism. For doorknobs without visible mounting bolts, first pry off the rose mounting plate or unscrew the set screw before removing it.

You can fireproof an existing door to some extent, but it's better to remove the old door and replace it with a fire-rated model. Anything dealing with extreme heat needs rigorous testing and a door you DIY fireproof will not undergo the same safety measures as a premade one. Consider a door with a rating of at least 30 minutes or more in residential areas.
