Small jobs welcome

"We needed to replace all of the existing tile in our large entry hall, downstairs family area, dining, kitchen, guest bathroom and laundry room. Mario and his crew were professional and experienced, kept us informed daily on what to expect during each phase of the project and completed the installation within the time promised. We paid approximately $12,000 and our new tile is beautiful. We confidently recommend M R Ceramic to anyone needing tile newly installed or replaced and will definitely use them again should the need arise."

"Our downstairs master closet had a line break, which flooded the downstairs. The work consisted of master bathroom and closet remodel, workout room remodel, wood flooring, and carpet throughout the house. Matt, with HCC led the effort of the rebuild, options for upgrades, and went to great length, asking questions, to see if what he was proposing would suit our needs and budget. Their contractors were responsive, communicated very well with me upon their arrival, and I was very comfortable that all issues that had arisen were to be taken care of. Quality was what we were looking for and given the time of many contractors out there working, I felt that Matt was dedicated to performing quality work, understood the intricacies of water mitigation, construction, insurance dynamics, design, and he treated my home as if it was his own and met all aspects of what I was looking for in putting this work into HCC's hands. If you are looking for an honest company, who has attention to detail, and performs quality work, HCC is an excellent choice. Would highly recommend."

"Shawn, with Super Floor Store, did a fantastic job of bathtub to shower conversion in two of our bathrooms. The quality of the work was over-the-top terrific. Beyond that the cost of the project was tremendous and was done well within the projected time frame. In fact we got a bid from another company that was $20K more than the Super Floor Store. We got everything we wanted and for a great price. Also, everyone involved in the project was nice and respectful. Super Floor Store also replaced the flooring in one of our bedrooms and did an equally super job."

Ceramic Tile questions, answered by experts

The average cost for tile installation is about $2,000, with a typical price range between $500 and $6,500. On a per-square-foot basis, you can expect to pay between $5 and $45 for installation.

Several factors influence the total cost, including:

  • Installation Site: Costs vary for different areas. Common project costs are: kitchen floor ($870–$6,100), countertop or backsplash ($500–$3,000), bathroom floor ($300–$2,400), or shower wall ($225–$2,000).

  • Tile Type and Quality: The material significantly impacts price. For example, standard ceramic or travertine tile can cost about $1 per square foot, while luxury options like marble can be as much as $350 per square foot for the material alone.

  • Project Size and Complexity: The total square footage, the complexity of the pattern, and the shape of the tile (e.g., square, rectangle, hexagon, mosaic) will affect labor and material costs.

  • Site Preparation: The amount of prep work needed, such as removing old tile or installing a new subfloor or backer board, can add to the final price.

  • Tile Characteristics: The tile's durability rating and porosity can also influence the price.

  • Location: Labor rates vary by geographic location.

No, tiling over painted walls or wallpapered surfaces is generally not recommended. Textured surfaces and paints will affect the adhesive, possibly causing tiles to lift or fall off. Painted walls with a semi-gloss or high-gloss finish are particularly difficult for adding tiles. It’s wise to strip the paint first if you install the tiles to drywall, although it’s still best to opt for a cement backer board.

Different types of tile cutters may work best depending on the type of tile you are cutting and the size of your project. There are two main types of tile cutters: manual and electric. Manual tile cutters are quick and easy to use for small projects and softer tile materials, but they can only make straight cuts. Electric tile cutters make light work of big projects and can cut through harder materials.

The underlayment determines a ceramic tile’s sturdiness, and a cement board or backer board works best. Be sure to tape the joints when using these materials, and consider laying it on top of a layer of thin-set for more stability.

Tiles last for around 100 years or more. Tiles on backsplashes can last even longer since they’re less likely to crack under foot traffic or from accidental drops, but even tile in high-traffic flooring can last a century or more with proper installation and upkeep. Porcelain tiles are denser and stronger than standard ceramic tiles, so they’ll last longer, often pushing past the 100-year mark.
