Customers say: True professional

"After spending a lot of money on professional leak finders, I was told that the reason my yard was soggy and growing weeds instead of grass was because of ground water. The ground water was beginning to compromise my paved driveway as well as tree growth.  Brandon Moser, the owner of Novation came to my house and gave me an estimate on the work required after looking carefully at the problem areas in my yard.  The start date was delayed by a little over a week, but once they started, the work crew headed by Brandon and Brian quickly and efficiently got the work done exactly as Brandon had described.  The result was really beautiful and the efficiency of ground water removal was immediate.  I know this job was small compared to much of the work they do, but they worked with the care and proficiency they provide the large expensive jobs. The cleanup at the end of the job was impressive.  I highly recommend Novation for all outdoor improvement needs.  You will love these guys. They are a great combination of respectful, polite, professional and hilarious!

Lawn Care questions, answered by experts

As a beginner, start by mowing your lawn in symmetrical rows by turning the mower at the end of each row and overlapping with the previous row. Use an edging tool or weedwacker to make your lawn look sharp and crisp around the edges, and then sweep the debris back into the yard. Take it slow, and know that you can adjust your approach or pattern the next time your grass needs a clip.

Your St. Augustine grass might look bad due to cold winter months, drought, pest invasion, or lawn disease. The first step is properly identifying the problem. Once you’ve figured out what’s making your grass look bad, you’ll need to employ the correct treatments. These treatments may include:

  • Properly mow your lawn and keep the clippings on the lawn as organic matter.

  • Use healthy irrigation techniques.

  • Use the right amount of fertilizer.

  • Keep up a good, regular maintenance routine.

  • Use fungicides.

No, carpetgrass and St. Augustine grass are two different species. However this is a very common misconception and you may even find St. Augustine grass is mislabeled as carpetgrass. Carpetgrass does not have as much shade tolerance as St. Augustine grass, and has narrower blades with an alternating pattern (while St. Augustine grass has an opposite pattern). St. Augustine grass doesn’t have the weedy, high seedheads that carpetgrass produces.

Yes, it's perfectly safe and environmentally sound to mulch leaves with a lawn mower, provided that the layer of leaves isn't too thick and the leaves are dry and crispy. Too many wet leaves get sticky and will clog the mower. Thick layers of leaves can suffocate the lawn after the leaves have been mulched, so the layer should be no more than six inches thick.

The best times to mow your lawn are mid-morning or early evening. Mowing in the mid-morning, around 10 a.m., allows any dew to evaporate so the grass is dry. Cutting dry grass is easier on both the lawn and the mower, and this timing gives the grass blades time to recover in the sunlight before the peak afternoon heat. Alternatively, you can mow in the late afternoon or early evening once the heat of the day has passed. Avoid mowing too early in the morning when the grass is still wet with dew, and try not to mow during the hottest part of the day, as high temperatures and harsh sunlight can put extra stress on the grass.
