"This is a very professional company. Everyone I spoke with were very helpful and quick with answers. My house is very old and the city required it to be decked over the 1x12 shiplap boards. The estimator dealt with the city and my insurance and was very quick on answers. The work was excellent and some boards were replaced that I thought I would have to do. I would recommend this company to all. If I need another roof due to weather, I'll call Lon Smith roofing. I had first called another roofing company that was advertised on the radio. I was not impressed with that company but knew I wanted to go with Lon Smith after calling them."

Being a senior citizen & alone, I am hesitant to deal with contractors. They scheduled My roof quickly and the whole team was courteous and professional. Roland himself even came by to check on the roof. I feel safe and comfortable knowing I chose a company that actually cares about people. I am so happy and grateful to Melissa and Rolands"

"Casey from General Roofing was great, from the initial call to my roof repair. He arrived on sight within 30 minutes of our call, did an inspection of what I needed, and gave me a fair quote. Repaired my roof quickly and did such a great and seamless job that you can’t even tell which area needed it. I would definitely recommend and will call them if I have any future needs."

"I had an offer on my house and I need the roof repaired fast and by someone I can trust. I called Mike Norwood and spoke to him for some time regarding the roof and what had to be done. He was such a pleasure to talk to. I ended up choosing Mike because he knew a lot about roofing as well as being an adjuster for an insurance company in his past. He was able to get the roof finished on time for the house close making his deadline as well as mine. He kept me posted throughout the process (since I live out of state) by phone and email. In the end, he emailed me pictures of the final project. The roof looked beautiful. Even though I don't own the house anymore, I will sure drive by to see his work. He was very professional and courteous. I would recommend him over and over again. Thanks Mike and your team!"

Roofing questions, answered by experts

Building code allows 24-inch on-center spacing for roof trusses. However, you can install them on 12- or 16-inch centers to handle large loads or other exceptional circumstances. In cases such as covering a wide span or supporting alternative roofing materials, where a structural engineer needs to evaluate or create a design for your trusses, the plans will indicate the spacing.

Whether a metal or shingle roof is better for you depends on your preferences. Standing seam metal roofs require little to no maintenance, but if you install a screw-down metal roof where the fasteners are exposed, the gaskets on the fasteners will dry rot and need to be replaced. Generally, screw-down metal roofs need to be re-screwed every 15 to 20 years.

Metal roofs are energy-efficient and have extended warranties, while asphalt shingles are less durable than most. They tend to lose color and get damaged over time, and absorb heat from the sun.

The most crucial roof-strengthening method is achievable by following proper construction methods and guidelines from the start. To strengthen an existing roof, framers and DIYers can add hurricane ties or straps to the structure, sister rafters and other framing or truss members, or install additional fasteners or adhesives where necessary.

There are two main types of roofing shingles: 3-tab and architectural. Architectural shingles cost more than 3-tab but offer a more unique look and can last longer. However, 3-tab shingles are lightweight and affordable, and many people use them for both patching roofs and installing new roofs. Ultimately, the best type for you depends on your budget and your home’s aesthetic.

Sometimes chimney caps blow off during storms or fall off after rusting away. While this typically won’t cause structural damage, failing to replace a chimney cap can. A chimney cap prevents moisture, animals, and debris from entering your chimney, all of which can cause serious problems, such as damage to the masonry or blockages in the flue.
