"I had not educated myself about what was available to replace my worn plastic bubble skylights until recently, but the worry about them breaking during hailstorms was always a concern in the back of my mind. The seal was not tight on my existing skylights and energy efficiency had to be bad. After I researched Velux hail-proof glass and saw Freelite deals with their products, I contacted them via the request a quote on Angie's. I described that I was interested Velux white laminated glass - [*** Link removed ***] (opposed to clear glass or an added blind). Marie was back with me quickly with a fair estimate, and Nathan came a few days later to measure for a formal proposal to be written. My sizes were standard and I'm sure that helped, but received nothing but professional service from Marie and Nathan, and the installation looks great. The new glass keeps out a ton of noise as well. If only finding a good window company was this simple. Happy customer!"

"They have a paint crew that works with them and they did the entire outside part of the house. They did an excellent job on the antiques. They do fine work and they have been here for over a year. They were good with the dogs. They did a spring inspection on the roof, gutters, chimney, chimney caps, and they were the ones that alerted us to the hail damage. There were dents and holes in the chimney cap. They tell me what needs to be done, I order the materials, and then the next month they do the work. They put me on a list and if someone cancels, I get the appointment. They do a lot of work for us. I was so impressed with their work, I have recommended them. They have become very popular. They can do indoor and outdoor jobs."

"Highly recommend Woodlands Roofing and Exteriors! So professional with tons of southern hospitality. They came out arrived on time which is ideal since I'm pretty busy with my own work schedule. Treated me like my home mattered and wasn't just some job they were trying to get done with. My roof was examined for damage at the time and a quote was drawn up in minutes. They started the job the next time week. The day the roof was started the crew was out there first thing in the morning getting things started and had finished in a timely matter. When finished I couldn't have. Even more happy with all of the work and on top of that the cleanup was fantastic not a nail, screw, scrap of shingle could be found which I've had happen before with a prior company I had used! Not a fun experience getting a flat after running over a nail in your driveway!!! That wasn't the case her woodlands roofing was fantastic I'll definitely be using them if I ever need anything similar and have recvomended them to family friends coworkers and neighbors since then! They were absolutely amazing!!"

Skylights questions, answered by experts

Yes, skylights can affect a home’s energy efficiency, either positively or negatively. Properly installed, energy-efficient skylights with Low-E coatings, double glazing, and UV-blocking glass can help regulate indoor temperatures and reduce heating and cooling costs. However, poorly insulated or older skylights can contribute to heat loss in winter and excess heat gain in summer, lowering overall energy efficiency.

Whether you need a permit to install a skylight depends on the scope of the project and local regulations. Generally, permits are required if the installation involves altering the structural components of your home, such as moving roof rafters. In some municipalities, a permit might also be necessary if the skylight protrudes above the highest point of your existing roof. However, if no structural changes are made, a permit may not be needed. The cost for a skylight installation permit is typically under $100. A convenient time to add a skylight is during a roof replacement, as your contractor can incorporate the new opening into the design.

Local window and door specialists, glaziers, and roofers should all install skylights. You can also do an internet search to find companies that specialize in skylight installation near you. Keep in mind that skylight installation is very complex and can be dangerous without the proper tools and safety precautions, so we don’t recommend this as a DIY project.

To maintain a skylight and ensure its performance over time, regular maintenance is required. This includes periodically cleaning the glass and frame to remove dirt, debris, and condensation. It is also crucial to inspect the seals and flashing at least once a year for any signs of wear, degradation, or leaks, paying special attention after heavy storms. Ensure that the drainage system is clear to prevent water buildup and potential leaks. Address minor issues like cracks promptly and consider occasional resealing to prevent drafts and moisture problems. While energy-efficient skylights with Low-E coatings or double glazing may require less upkeep, periodic professional servicing can help keep any skylight in optimal condition.

Fixed skylights are by far the most popular type. Because skylights can be pretty high up on your ceiling, fixed (rather than operable) skylights remove some maintenance from the equation. Plus, you don’t have to constantly worry if you shut your skylight fully the last time you opened it or if you’re going to find a leak later on during a rainy day.
