"Emilio and his crew showed up and showed out! Very professional, same day quote, on time every time, professional, thorough explanation of the process and paint products used, quick clean up, amazing work, and great feedback. Exceeded our expectations! Would strongly recommend to family, friends, and neighbors. Services provided: power washing, painting, gutter cleaning, and replacement of some of the woodwork on the back patio. Will certainly look to use them again in the near future for additional projects. The Speedâ  s"

"The team at Ortega’s Painting Services and More provided quality services beyond our expectations. They skillfully repaired sheetrock, painted the interior of our entire home, and provided tree service in under 2 weeks. In addition, they were thoughtful, kind, and overall great people. We highly recommend this family business and will definitely work with them again on future projects."

"My criteria for evaluating people who work on my property are punctuality, communication, attention to detail, precision, care around landscaping, and cleanup. E.A's people were excellent on all counts. They arrived on time each day and worked tirelessly. Transfers from one color to another were crisp, clean, and sharply defined. The workers tightly covered every window and door, and even much of my very large deck, to avoid overspray. Shrubs, trees, and flower beds were not broken, trampled, or damaged in any way , and the site was straightened and cleaned at the end of each day."

"The Custom Painting painters moved my furniture, covered it carefully, taped off the areas for trim and did a great job of coverage of my walls. I was very pleased with their careful treatment of my furniture and carpets. I’ve hired Custom Painting again recently to do more painting in another part of my home. Great company with great people!"

Joe Lopez relpaced celings, plumber cut outs, insulation, and did some painting He always left a clean job while the required drying time passed. Small jobs welcome

"I hired them to do a patio deck, total rebuild. It required part of the old deck to be removed. I had a tree taken down that was in the middle of the old deck and our plan was just to go over it with the new deck. I was not on site but they realized that the tree stump and roots would not allow them to put their new deck boards down properly. They rented equipment and removed the tree stump and roots. I had a friend who has extensive experience in construction monitor the job and he felt like they had done an excellent job. They bid the job to low, I paid them extra for their expense and time. I would use them again and would recommended them to my friends."

"George and his team did a great job. Good communication. They were very helpful and professional. They went over the pool systems, redid the decking with stamped concrete, they updated the tile and coping. They went out of their way to help move plants and cut around the dog paws in the old patio. I would recommend them highly!"

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Staining a deck with a rag is typically a better option than using a brush, as it helps the stain penetrate deeper into the wood. However, both brushes and rags are best reserved for detailed work because using these tools on an entire deck can require tediously crawling around on your hands and knees. A pad applicator, sprayer, or roller are preferred alternatives to applying stain over the majority of a deck. Use a rag for railings and other detailed work, and let the wood soak up as much of the stain as possible before wiping away drips or pools.

DIY is possible but presents risks of uneven surfaces or improper adhesion; professionals offer expertise to ensure a lasting finish.

Stains penetrate wood best when it's cool and dry, so you want to avoid moisture. If the wood is wet upon application, or if it rains before the stain dries, the water will soak into the wood and displace the staining solution. This leads to a flaky and blotchy look, which is the opposite of a sumptuous even coat. Once the stain has fully cured, after about 3 days, rain shouldn’t cause you any problems.

Limewash and whitewash are two techniques used to give brick a light, matte finish, but they differ in composition, application, and permanence. The best choice depends on your aesthetic goals and the specific surface.

Composition

  • Limewash: A natural and environmentally friendly option made from limestone, water, and sometimes pigments. It is breathable and soaks into porous surfaces like brick.

  • Whitewash: Traditionally made from lime, water, chalk, and binders, but a similar look can be achieved with watered-down white paint. It is paint-based and sits on top of the surface.

Appearance and Finish

  • Limewash: Provides a natural, textured appearance that allows the brick's character to show through. It offers a more traditional finish.

  • Whitewash: Creates a softer, more opaque finish, often used for a rustic or shabby-chic style.

Application and Permanence

  • Limewash: Is semi-permanent and can be removed, making it a good choice if you might want to change the look in the future. It requires more skill to apply and cannot be used on previously painted brick.

  • Whitewash: Is a more permanent solution. It is more forgiving to apply and can be used on painted brick. However, because it sits on the surface, it can trap moisture.

Ultimately, if you want a breathable, natural, and reversible finish for unpainted brick, limewash is a great option. If you need a more permanent, opaque coating that can be applied over painted surfaces, whitewash is the better choice. Whitewashing may also be more economical, costing approximately $1.40 to $4.20 per square foot.

In most cases, sanding an old deck before staining it is necessary to achieve a decent finish. If your old deck has a relatively new stain finish on it and you're only doing touch-ups, you can generally skip the sanding part. However, if your goal is to make the deck look and function better, sanding first is a must.
