Our home was built in 1974. Our ground was getting a bit 'squishy' in the area around one of our tanks, and the smell, Some septic places were like, "Gotta go aerobic" Um, new homes, yes, older homes with the existing system, no. Plus, aerobic do cost more to install. Nothing like flushing money...

Wastewater flows into a tank buried in the ground outside your home, and then water runs from the tank to a drainage field using sloped pipes.

While the lifespan of your septic system will depend on a variety of factors, including how well you keep up with regular inspections and maintenance, it will eventually need replacement. Most septic tanks can last between 20 and 30 years, and under good circumstances, a septic drainage field may last up to 50. On average, though, about every 30 years or so, a major septic renovation will be necessary.
