An aboveground pool should be level within 1 inch—and it starts to become unsafe after a couple of inches. It’s a good idea to run the pool pump while swimming because your filter and skimmers will be active to help keep the water clean. Additionally, if you have pool features, you would naturally keep those pumps running while you swim. However, it’s not a requirement to run your pump while you swim.

You can install an aboveground pool on various surfaces, including dirt, sand, concrete, and grass. You can’t install a pool on an uneven surface, though, so be sure to level the ground before building your pool. You also can’t install your pool on top of a rocky surface. Three or 4 inches of smooth sand or soil is the ideal surface to go under an aboveground pool.
