Heroes Lawn Care was founded in 2012 by Taylor Olberding and Mike Marlow with the goal of giving the community a trustworthy lawn care company. Taylor and Mikes location did it all from lawn mowing, snow removal, and Christmas light installation. This made the most sense when first starting out to stay busy. Now moving into the franchise world, these services have been cut back to focus on irrigation, fertilization, and pet waste removal. These three service lines all have major emphasis on creating and maintaining a healthy lawn year round by giving the customers lawn exactly what it needs.

Lawn Fertilization and Treatment questions, answered by experts

The best time to top dress your lawn depends on what type of grass you have and what climate you live in. Cool-season grass should be top dressed in late fall, while warm-season grass should be top dressed in late spring.

First, you should figure out whether you have dormant or dead grass. Dead grass won’t come back, so you’ll have to reseed if you’re hoping for a lush lawn. However, grass can go dormant if it hasn’t received enough water or if temperatures are too cold. If it’s still decently warm outside, you can revive dormant grass by watering it. But if it’s mid-January in New England, for example, you’ll need to wait until the weather warms up again. If you want to keep grass green in winter, consider a grass like Kentucky bluegrass, which maintains its color year-round.

Look for a broadleaf herbicide, one that has been formulated specifically for dandelions and is considered grass-safe.

Depending on the species, most fescue grasses thrive in USDA hardiness zones 3 through 8, though some varieties can thrive as far as zone 10. While it’s a cool-season grass, it has the unique ability to adapt and thrive in many different types of climates. For this reason, you'll mostly find fescue grasses throughout the transitional temperature zones of the country.

Depending on the lawn treatments, the best times of the year to redo your lawn are between mid-August and mid-September for overseeding and renovation treatments. For areas such as the southern United States, lawn aeration works best during the fall, when the temperatures begin to drop. Otherwise, early spring is your next best bet because the grass is fresh and ready to absorb nutrients, and the temperature isn’t hot enough to fry the grass and the renovation materials.
