"It went great. The pricing is reasonable. The person that showed up was great with customer service and was very knowledgeable. He completed the fence work, remodeled my kitchen including the cabinets, he laid down tiles, repaired my bathroom, did the plumbing, landscaping, and everything. He was able to work around my schedule because I work on a tight shift at my job."

"I contacted J.D. Taylor right after New Years in the first week of 2012 and in a couple of days he returned my call and made an appointment to look at the job and make an estimate. He was thorough in measurements and taking notes as we talked about what I wanted to have done. Later he sent me the estimate with bullet points that he had captured on the details. Included in the task was pouring a concrete floor into what had been a dirt floor and this was done within the confines of the structure. Sections of the wood siding that were in bad shape were replaced and repairs with bondo were done for a few areas that needed minor patching. The non-functioning garage door was replaced with an electric garage door with electronic garage key, and the door opening on the side was fitted with a standard door frame and door with lock. The paint on the outside of the garage was prepared and coated with primer and top coat. One of the details that did not get captured in the notes (and that I did not pay attention to until I did not see it at job completion) was for the addition of a workbench at the end of the garage. Mr. Taylor had his workman come out and add this the next week and only billed me $210 for this work (this is included in the $6160).
(In addition and not included in the $6160, Mr. Taylor contacted an electrical contractor he often works with and that company took care of supplying new wire for a dedicated 20 amp service from the outside house fuse box to the garage.)
I am pleased with the thoroughness, honesty and attention to detail that this contractor displayed. I am quite pleased with the quality of my new garage and would in the future hire him again."

Ceramic Tile questions, answered by experts

You can lay tile directly on a plywood countertop, but if it’s a high-traffic surface in a kitchen, it’s better to add a moisture-resistant base. Plywood is susceptible to moisture, so if dampness seeps through from the surface around the sink or where you prep food, it can cause the plywood to warp, leading to grout damage, cracked tiles, or mold growth under the surface.

Like glass tiles, you will not need to seal most porcelain tiles, particularly if the porcelain is already glazed. It depends on quality. Porcelain is very water resistant, but it is not 100% waterproof. To avoid staining, some homeowners use a penetrating sealer. It is also a good idea to seal your grout. Unless you use epoxy grout, grout is very porous and can harbor bacteria, mold, and mildew.

Yes, you can tile over existing tiles in a bathroom, but it is not always recommended. For this method to be successful, the original tile surface must be clean, flat, and free of damage such as cracks, unevenness, mold, or mildew. While tiling over existing tiles can save time and money, there are potential drawbacks. The new adhesive may not bond properly, and the process adds extra weight to the wall or floor. Additionally, the increased height of the surface could interfere with door clearances. For the best and most durable results, removing the old tiles before installing new ones is generally the better option.

Yes, provided you aren’t installing drywall over it. But you can skim coat it, apply new tile right on top, paint it, or stencil it. For more budget- and DIY-friendly options, you can install beadboard or apply decals. Just make sure that the current tiles are in good condition and prepped well for the paint or adhesive to stick.

The average cost for tile installation is about $2,000, with a typical price range between $500 and $6,500. On a per-square-foot basis, you can expect to pay between $5 and $45 for installation.

Several factors influence the total cost, including:

  • Installation Site: Costs vary for different areas. Common project costs are: kitchen floor ($870–$6,100), countertop or backsplash ($500–$3,000), bathroom floor ($300–$2,400), or shower wall ($225–$2,000).

  • Tile Type and Quality: The material significantly impacts price. For example, standard ceramic or travertine tile can cost about $1 per square foot, while luxury options like marble can be as much as $350 per square foot for the material alone.

  • Project Size and Complexity: The total square footage, the complexity of the pattern, and the shape of the tile (e.g., square, rectangle, hexagon, mosaic) will affect labor and material costs.

  • Site Preparation: The amount of prep work needed, such as removing old tile or installing a new subfloor or backer board, can add to the final price.

  • Tile Characteristics: The tile's durability rating and porosity can also influence the price.

  • Location: Labor rates vary by geographic location.
