"Green Quality Air provides excellent service. They did such a good job cleaning and repairing our fireplace that we also had them clean out our dryer vent that goes up two stories. Chris and Leslie are professional and thorough. Highly recommend!"

"I have written a previous post for American Clear Air but wanted to write another. This is the first time that I have ever written two for the same company. Matt, the owner did a great job for us. Best price as well. They initially came out and used chemicals on the mold around our air conditioning coils and today they finished the job by cleaning out the a/c ducts along with the dryer duct. My wife and i watched as they cleaned the outside dryer duct and we could not believe all of the lint that came out of there. It literally looked like it was snowing gray for about 3 or 4 minutes. Soooo glad we had this done!"

Air Duct Cleaning questions, answered by experts

While you can attempt to remove mold from ductwork using a mixture of water, baking soda, and laundry detergent, flexible ducts are fragile and may tear when you scrub at the mold to remove it. If you suspect mold is growing in your flexible ductwork, it’s best to contact a professional for help.

The best air duct cleaning methods involve removing the debris or dust in the ductwork through the use of a vacuum. Air duct pros refer to this method as negative pressure cleaning. To knock debris loose inside the ductwork, you may need to use a hand-operated brush or a rotary brush. You then can use the vacuum to suck up the loose debris and remove them from the ducts. If mold is present, pros may use a chemical spray to try to kill any bacteria or mold inside the system.

If possible, avoid placing furniture in front of a return air vent. A blocked air vent can cause your HVAC system to use more energy, which in turn can lower the life span of your unit and raise your energy bill. Furniture can also trap hot or cold air, damaging your furniture or appliances.

Professional duct installers suggest leaving between six and 12 inches of space in front of an air return vent. If you must place furniture in front of a return air vent, try to aim for putting furniture over a floor vent instead of in front of a wall vent, and avoid draping curtains over any vent system.

No, FPR isn’t necessarily better than MERV. Both systems measure an air filter’s effectiveness, but they express it on different scales. FPR ratings range from 1 to 12, while MERV ratings run between 1 and 20. However, some people might find FPR ratings easier to understand since they’re color-coded and have descriptors like “good,” “better,” and “premium.”

Yes, vent deflectors do work to redirect hot and cold air distributed from your HVAC system. If installed correctly—and magnetic deflectors make it easy to DIY— you might find that a deflector is enough to redirect the warm or cool air where you prefer it to be. At the very least, it’s an easy, inexpensive experiment before committing to the bigger project of moving the air vent to a new location.
