"A hailstorm caused widespread damage, including punching a hole in my skylight. Initially, I contacted nearby roofers for repairs, but they were all busy due to the storm's extensive impact. One of the nearby roofers, who also suffered damage, temporarily covered the skylight with a tarp. However, it would take weeks to get a new skylight dome. After two weeks, I found Skylight Solutions in Dallas, who manufacture skylight domes and ship them nationwide. Despite not being very close, they were within an hour's drive, which was fortunate. Their professional inspected the skylight with the tarp still on, ensuring the house remained dry. As the skylight's size was not standard, Skylight Solutions had to make a custom dome. A few weeks later, the same professional installed the new dome, offering a more secure installation option, which I declined due to budget constraints from our recent house move. Nonetheless, the new dome looks great both from the outside and inside, reflecting the quality product and installation from Skylight Solutions, evident in their 4.9 out of five rating."

"Matt and team were wonderful. I have an older home with skylights that were leaking when the weather changed. Older home can sometimes be challenging to troubleshoot but the entire team at Freelite was committed to fixing the issue. I love my Freelite Skylights and would absolutely call Freelite on any skylight issues in the future."

"They were able to replace the skylight in less than 2 weeks after the quote. They did a good job and make the finish on the inside look good. A few weeks later, there was a heavy rain and my new skylight is no longer leaking like my old one that was replaced."

"Used them at the recommendation of a friend, to install gutters for two story house. Gutters Worked however when it rained heavy, my flowerbeds got completely flooded due to where the downspout was installed. I called and sent photos to see if maybe I needed additional downspouts installed or relocated to divert the water elsewhere away from my foundation and never got a call back from them. On two separate occasions. Then come to find out from the person who referred them, they responded to him in recent days and continued to do work for him. I guess I will not be using them for further projects if they don’t even respond about the projects they completed. I guess since it’s a small job, maybe it wasn’t worth their time."

"FCR was our 5th roofing company to contact. Most would not even show after we contacted them. Dave came on our time and took measurements and gave us an fair estimate. He also jumped through our Mortgage Companies hoops to get the job done. The workers did the roof in a day and a half and cleaned up after themselves. It was estimated only to take one day, but understood that the pitch of our house was harder than expected. We were able to choose our color without added cost and it looks better than before. FCR offers a great warranty compared to other contractors. We would and did recommend FCR to our friends and family."

Skylights questions, answered by experts

Skylights might sometimes increase your homeowners insurance premium, but the increase is usually minimal. Some home insurance companies won’t adjust your premium with the addition of a skylight, so you can contact your insurer or your professional skylight installer to ask about any expected changes. It’s crucial to have an expert install the skylight, as insurance companies may not insure your roof or cover water damage that results from a non-professional skylight installation.

Yes, you can cover up a skylight if you no longer wish to have it in your space. There are a few options for covering up a skylight. One option is to install a skylight cover or shade that can be easily opened or closed as needed, allowing you to control the amount of light entering the room. Another option is to cover the skylight with a solid material, such as plywood or drywall, effectively sealing it off. However, when covering a skylight, it's essential to ensure proper insulation and waterproofing to prevent any issues in the future.

The decision to remove a skylight depends on your specific circumstances and preferences. There are several reasons why you might consider removing a skylight, such as extensive damage, a desire for better insulation, or the need to change the room's layout. Additionally, if the skylight is causing leaks or other issues, it may be necessary to remove and replace it (which can incur additional skylight installation costs). It's important to assess your specific situation and consult with professionals if needed to make an informed decision.

Yes, skylights can affect a home’s energy efficiency, either positively or negatively. Properly installed, energy-efficient skylights with Low-E coatings, double glazing, and UV-blocking glass can help regulate indoor temperatures and reduce heating and cooling costs. However, poorly insulated or older skylights can contribute to heat loss in winter and excess heat gain in summer, lowering overall energy efficiency.

Yes, reputable manufacturers typically provide warranties for their roof windows and skylights, and many installers also offer a labor warranty, although labor warranties often don’t last as long as the manufacturer’s warranty. A warranty from a skylight manufacturer is helpful in the event of leaks or other damage down the road on this type of home feature. The length of time and the terms of the warranty may vary, so it's important to review the details before making a purchase.
