"I had not educated myself about what was available to replace my worn plastic bubble skylights until recently, but the worry about them breaking during hailstorms was always a concern in the back of my mind. The seal was not tight on my existing skylights and energy efficiency had to be bad. After I researched Velux hail-proof glass and saw Freelite deals with their products, I contacted them via the request a quote on Angie's. I described that I was interested Velux white laminated glass - [*** Link removed ***] (opposed to clear glass or an added blind). Marie was back with me quickly with a fair estimate, and Nathan came a few days later to measure for a formal proposal to be written. My sizes were standard and I'm sure that helped, but received nothing but professional service from Marie and Nathan, and the installation looks great. The new glass keeps out a ton of noise as well. If only finding a good window company was this simple. Happy customer!"

"Daylight Rangers installed 2 solatubes a year ago: 1 in my kitchen and 1 in my hallway. The before and after difference is amazing. My kitchen and hallway were so dark that I needed to keep lights on all day. The solatubes are round and match my recessed lighting. I don't need to turn the lights on until evening. The brightness was a little much for me at first, so he put filters in which softened the light. I would recommend solatubes to add natural lighting to a room. I would also recommend Daylight Rangers. They were prompt, did a good job with installation, made a follow up visit and follow up calls. Good customer service."

"The roofer did not show up at the appointment time. When I finally called to see why no one came I was told they didn't come due to the rain. I believe they were in Dallas. I am in the mid cities and it had not rained at all. The problem was no one called me to tell me they would not come or ask if it was raining where I was. So the lady asked if I still wanted a roofer to come and we arranged for him to come right away which she said would be about 40 minutes. 1 1/2 hours later the man arrived. He walked around on the roof a short time and then showed me some pictures of where the roof needed to be replaced and a few minor spots of re nailing. He said I would get an estimate from the company. I told him I wanted copies of the pictures. I repeated this a number of times. The man was hispanic and I am not sure how well we were understanding each other. I later got a one line estimate to replace part of roof...no detail as to how much material, etc., no other detail to repairs, no pictures. I called the company as I was in process of selling my house and needing to know what had to be done or not done but was not going to give a "blank check" to fix "whatever". The estimate also did not deduct the amount spent on the Angie's Deal as promised in the deal. The office finally corrected that and sent me a new quote minus that...but no further detail as to materials or pictures. My impression: the Angie's Deal for this company is a sham...not worth the expense as you get little for your $$ and they hopefully get a customer for thousands of $$ of roofing repair. I also hear this company advertised on the radio frequently and I do not recommend. I did end up with another company who looked at my roof with my insurance adjuster and I replaced the total roof in a few days time. The new company was terrific to work with and allowed me to close on time and sell my home."

Skylights questions, answered by experts

Fixed skylights are by far the most popular type. Because skylights can be pretty high up on your ceiling, fixed (rather than operable) skylights remove some maintenance from the equation. Plus, you don’t have to constantly worry if you shut your skylight fully the last time you opened it or if you’re going to find a leak later on during a rainy day.

When planning out skylights and deciding how big they should be, it's important to look at the dimensions of the interior space. In addition to changing a room aesthetically, skylights influence the illumination and temperature of the space below. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends that a skylight’s size should never be more than 5% of the floor area in rooms with many windows.

Yes, reputable manufacturers typically provide warranties for their roof windows and skylights, and many installers also offer a labor warranty, although labor warranties often don’t last as long as the manufacturer’s warranty. A warranty from a skylight manufacturer is helpful in the event of leaks or other damage down the road on this type of home feature. The length of time and the terms of the warranty may vary, so it's important to review the details before making a purchase.

Yes, you can install skylights on an existing roof, and it’s a common service that many homeowners opt for, especially on older homes built when skylights weren’t as prevalent. The installation process will be a bit more involved, and the design and planning process will take longer, meaning you’ll pay more to install a skylight on an existing roof than you would in new construction. The process involves cutting a hole in the roof, moving rafters, if necessary, and installing and sealing around the skylight.

Professionals repair or seal a skylight by inspecting for damages, resealing any gaps with appropriate weatherproofing materials, replacing cracked glass or seals, and ensuring the frame is tightly fitted to prevent future leaks and ensure proper drainage.
