"We had set a time for 9:am to meet at my new home to get started on the job. I did not hear anything from them until 11:30 am when they called to say they were running late and if i found someone else to do the work that was fine. I told them to go ahead and come on because I needed it done. It was another hour before they showed up after telling me it would be 20 min. They also tried to over charge me. They had quoted me $65 1st hr and $40 per hr after that. I was told a max of 1 hr for the pet door and 5 minutes for the thermostat. They tried to charge me $165 + tax AND WANTED A TIP!! and was here 2.5 hrs. I refused to pay that and she settled for $126.50 which was still to much considering they were late and did crappy work!"

Big Mack Electric is an up-and-coming business that provides a number of services for your electrical needs. Please give us a call. "No job too small for Big Mack Electric." Services: Residential and Commercial services. Lighting and Power Service; Panel Upgrades, Generator Installations, Remodels, New Construction

"They came on time agreed upon. They went to the bedroom to check what additional work, if any was needed. They informed me right away that no other work was necessary. They installed the fan. They asked for our preferences (such as which color we preferred) before they installed the fan. They were done within about an hour. They offered to clean up the floor of some debris they had accumulated, but that was not necessary. They were very professional; they addressed me as Mrs. Joseph. When I asked about other work they can do, he informed me and gave me a "guesstimate.""

Ceiling Fans questions, answered by experts

If you’re replacing an old fixture with a ceiling fan, you usually won’t need a permit, but if your electrician runs new wiring for the fixture, you likely will need a permit. Building permits are necessary in most municipalities if you’re making changes to your electrical system, so even if you have partial wiring run to the area and need new wiring installed for added functionality, you’ll probably need a permit. Your electrician should be able to let you know if you need one, and they’ll typically file the paperwork for you.

If the fan doesn’t have a switch, connect the white wire from the ceiling to the white wire from the fan; connect the green wire to the ground wire; connect both black wires; and connect both blue wires. If yours has a switch, the white and green wires are connected the same way. However, connect the ceiling’s red wire to the light’s black wire and the ceiling’s black wire to the fan’s black wire.

The square footage of your room will dictate the correct ceiling fan blade size. For example:

  • Rooms smaller than 75 square feet require a fan that is 29 to 36 inches.

  • Rooms up to 175 square feet require 42- to 48-inch fans.

  • Rooms up to 350 square feet require 52- to 56-inch fans.

  • Expansive spaces over 350 square feet need a fan larger than 60 inches.

It is relatively rare for a ceiling fan to fall. A properly installed ceiling fan is attached firmly to a ceiling joist. Even if the fan is wobbling, it’s unlikely to fall down. However, you should promptly repair your fan when you notice wobbling or imbalance just to be safe.

Keeping dust off fans can keep them working optimally and help keep dust mites or bacteria from building up. Dust fans weekly with a duster, microfiber cloth, old pillowcase, or vacuum attachment. You can also try spraying a clean fan with a store-bought dust-repellent product or making a DIY dust-repellent with water and a small amount of liquid fabric softener mixed in.
