"David and his father, Jose, were outstanding! They arrived on time, were exceptionally professional and I couldn’t be happier with the end result. There were no surprises, explaining every step of what they were doing and answering any question I had. I would (and likely will) use J&D Woodwork again without a doubt!"

"Table leg was kicked by a student which caused the wood to be shredded and splintered. I really thought I would have to replace the leg or that it would be expensive to to fix! Rob did an amazing job without having to create a new piece and it was completed super quick. Would hire again!"

"I would highly recommend Santos Creativity! They did an amazing job on our staircase and even completed it sooner than expected. Our staircase went from an old, carpeted, dingy staircase to a beautiful updated staircase that looks bigger and brighter. We had Juan put in new treads, posts, risers, handrails, trim and ballusters. The treads, posts and handrails were stained dark and the risers and trim were painted white. They installed metal ballusters for us, as well. The transformation is stunning and we absolutely love our new staircase! Call Juan!"

Woodworking questions, answered by experts

You should avoid drilling or cutting into load-bearing beams because removing material will weaken it and increase the risk of structural damage or even collapse. If you do need to drill into a load-bearing beam, speak with a structural engineer first to discuss where it’s safest to drill and the width and depth of the bit that’s safe to use.

If you don’t have a coping saw, you can use an angle grinder to cope crown molding, but it takes a little more precision. Place your molding down on your workbench, angle the grinder at a 45-degree angle toward the molding, and back cut the wood. You’ll need to carefully angle your grinder to accommodate the curves in the wood, and aim to remove around 1 inch from the profile of the molding.

The boards between floor joists are called bridging or blocking boards. These are the shortest pieces of wood in the flooring system—with beams being the longest and joists sitting somewhere in the middle—and they serve to reinforce the joists and help provide even support to the flooring above. Bridging specifically helps cut down on uneven and creaking floors in your living area.

Some states require carpenters to be licensed to perform forms of carpentry, such as framing. The license requires a certain amount of experience and to pass an examination. In states that don’t require carpenters to be licensed, they must be licensed as a contractor if they work independently rather than solely as a subcontractor under a licensed builder. Use Angi’s contractor licensing tool to find out whether a potential carpenter is licensed in your state.

While you may have heard people use millwork and carpentry interchangeably, they aren’t the same. Millwork is a type of carpentry, which means that carpentry isn’t always millwork. You can tell millwork apart from other types of carpentry because it’s manufactured at a mill. Notably, casework is also confused with millwork. Casework is different because it refers to boxes like cabinets and bookshelves.
