"David and his father, Jose, were outstanding! They arrived on time, were exceptionally professional and I couldn’t be happier with the end result. There were no surprises, explaining every step of what they were doing and answering any question I had. I would (and likely will) use J&D Woodwork again without a doubt!"

"I had a great experience with Fernandez Landscape Contractors! My patio was removed and replaced with travertine and the front of the house was landscaped beautifully. The job was embellished with many extras, mulch placed in additional areas, sod put down where grass was sparse, minor woodworking adjustments... The owner, Ernesto, pulled it all together and the crew had an extremely strong work ethic and pride in themselves and one another. Above and beyond is the best way to describe each person's performance, their skills truly shone and the job was completed using quality products, I'm so proud of it. This was a good experience and the price of it was fair. If Ernesto says it'll be done, it's done and we all know that's usually not the case."

"Hector and Sander were punctual and professional throughout the interior kitchen cabinet paint project. Steve estimated the project cost carefully and there were no surprises or hidden costs. He came to our home a few times though out the project and maintained awareness and provided direction as needed. His communication was prompt and clear. Iâ m looking forward to working with Proline Painting for future projects."

Woodworking questions, answered by experts

It is common for a contractor to ask for a down payment before starting a project, especially for jobs that require purchasing materials and equipment or hiring a crew. The deposit amount can range from 10% to 50% of the total job cost. While a request for up to 50% is not unusual, a contractor should not ask for more than that, and you should never pay for a project in full before the work has begun. To protect yourself, always discuss payment terms before starting and have a written contract that outlines the project timeline and expectations. Additionally, be sure to hire reputable contractors and check their licensing and insurance before the project begins.

Many contractors prefer checks because they’re easy to track and have no associated fees. However, many also accept credit cards (though they might add a fee to cover their processing costs).

Learning how to frame a house includes picking the right lumber for the job. Most people will want to pick pine, spruce, or fir for the framing. These types of lumber are affordable and produce sturdy framing for structures. Look for kiln-dried lumber to reduce the risk of shrinkage or insect damage after installation. As part of what’s included in framing a house when you hire a professional, the contractor should order the lumber, so you don’t have to worry about finding the right lumber.

Most landscape timbers are 8 feet long, but some are also available in 10-foot and 12-foot lengths. Choose the length that will allow you to install landscape timbers using the least amount of cutting to fit. Shorter timbers will allow you to more easily create angles and shorter plant bed sides.

Before hiring a carpenter, the most important thing is to make sure they are properly qualified and insured for the job. It’s more than reasonable to ask your prospective carpenter for customer references, as well as about their licensing and insurance. You should also consider choosing a carpenter that specializes in your specific project area to ensure high-quality results.
