"We hired Crimson to build a retaining wall in our front yard. The City has placed a red tag on my project based on the fact Crimson did not call in the proper inspections on the retaining wall at 4 different points in the project. This wall is over 4' tall and in our city, an engineer is required to design the construction and there are inspections required to make sure the wall is constructed correctly. This was not done and I am left with an incomplete project. In addition, the wall has several pieces that simply come out. Some small pieces and one entire block (see picture). We have no idea if the footer was done properly so the entire wall will have to be deconstructed and the proper inspections will need to be done by the new company we have engaged to correct the mistakes made by Crimson and Clint. I would certainly not recommend Crimson or Clint based on the details missed in our project. Furthermore, I would not recommend them based on the fact that I have made every effort to resolve this issue including removing reviews and presenting reasonable solutions. Crimson did not have the proper insurance coverage to build our wall nor to perform a complex drainage project leaving me with no way to correct the issue other than to pay more money out of my pocket to a new contractor. I was presented an insurance policy prior to the project beginning, but upon calling them they informed me my claim would be denied based on the fact his policy only covered irrigation and landscaping, not drainage or retaining wall construction. Very disappointing experience my family and I have had to deal with for the past 6 months."

Arborists questions, answered by experts

Typical pergola kits include four support columns, several rafters, top runners, support beams, and a base for bolting the structure to a concrete surface. The types of pergolas vary by manufacturer and feature. Some have only two support columns, with the rest of the structure leaning against a carport or patio. Others have retractable shade canopies to keep cool in the summer.

Clean regularly, treat wood for weather resistance, and inspect for damage to ensure longevity.

Costs depend on material, size, design complexity, and additional features like lighting or seating.

DIY is possible for basic designs. Professional installation ensures stability and compliance with building codes.

Rather than using a common two-by-four piece of wood for a rafter, you probably will use two-by-six, two-by-eight, two-by-ten, or even two-by-twelve boards. Wider lumber is typically a better choice in a larger building as it provides more sturdiness. Some installers may use wider lumber for rafters near the edges of the roof, where the greatest stress occurs, and save money with narrower lumber toward the middle.
