"I've dealt with many contractors in the past, and I will say that Jorge is one of the best! He's honest, respectful, fairly priced, very responsive, delivers quality landscaping, and prioritizes customer satisfaction. I had a big landscaping job I wanted done before my housewarming party, essentially converting my entire front yard to gravel and doing a gravel design in the back with pavers. Jorge told me that he could have done by then. At first I was a little skeptical given the amount of work that needed to be done in one week, but his crew came in as promised on Monday and completed it right before my hose warming party. IT WAS A HIT! Lots of compliments on the landscaping design and turned out to be a great gathering! Also, Jorge's work crew is FANTASTIC! They were adaptable, kind, hard working, but also catered to the client's need to ensure customer satisfaction. He came out to replace a broken paver after the party -- truly guarantees his work. 100% Recommend"

"Came when they said they would. Professional job. They prepared the beds by raking and blowing leaves away first. Then spread the mulch, then cleaned up the driveway/sidewalk."

"John and his sons were excellent! If we could give them a rating higher than a 5 we would! John explained everything in detail, and did every thing right! He went above and beyond, upon his suggestion of a renovation to our siding on our home we saved enough money to put new windows all around! Not just on the front of the house! all three of them go the extra mile and the take care of your stuff! Very respectful and excellent work we are delighted! we will have them back for interior work soon."

"XEVEX was hired to replace part of my driveway & part of my front walk.I was very pleased with the price quoted for the project. They came, moved my plants & decor, removed the damaged concrete, installed new poured concrete. When the project was complete, they cleaned up the area very well. I would certainly employ XEVEX for any other projects."

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

Overall, a paver driveway is considered the easiest to maintain because homeowners are able to do driveway repair one piece at a time without impacting the rest of the driveway. Unlike paved options, paver driveways contain individual stones that aren't physically connected. By comparison, you may need to reseal or redo a full asphalt driveway if just one portion sustains a significant crack.

When hiring an asphalt paving contractor to install your driveway, ask as many questions up front as possible. Here are a few questions to ask a prospective driveway contractor:

  • How many years of experience do you have?

  • Are you licensed, bonded, and insured?

  • Do you have worker’s compensation?

  • Do you use subcontractors on your projects?

  • Do you clean up after the job is done?

  • Who is responsible for any damage to lawn or landscaping?

  • Do you provide a guarantee or warranty on your work?

  • Do you give free estimates?

  • What is the timeline for completion?

  • How do you handle change orders?

  • Can you provide at least three references?

  • Can I see some of the work you’ve done?

You should not attempt to install your own driveway. Whether working with asphalt or pavement, this is a complicated project that requires special equipment. Talk to some nearby asphalt or paving professionals and discuss your particular needs—it’s a good idea to get a few quotes and look at the company’s past work.

A solid driveway starts with the right asphalt mix, and for most homes, dense-graded hot mix asphalt (HMA) is the most recommended. It’s both durable and flexible, making it a reliable choice for residential use. A properly compacted 2-3 inch layer on a well-prepared crushed stone base will hold up for years. In areas with harsh winters or scorching summers, a slightly modified mix can help prevent cracking and rutting. No matter the climate, quality installation is just as important as the material itself, so hiring an experienced contractor ensures a smooth, long-lasting driveway built to last.

Asphalt and tarmac are not the same thing. Traditional tarmac, short for tarmacadam, uses tar as a binder to hold crushed stone together. Asphalt uses bitumen—a byproduct of crude oil—to bind aggregate. Though tarmac was once a go-to for roads, asphalt has become the modern standard. And these days, most surfaces referred to as “tarmac” are actually asphalt. So, while the names may overlap, the key distinction lies in the binder—tar for tarmac and bitumen for asphalt.
