"Butch called back right away. Came out in a timely fashion. Got one unit working. Then he said the main board was malfunctioning on the downstairs unit and would have to be replaced. It would cost 1200 or 1300. But if we spent a little extra on a service contract he would wave the trip fee and it would be 1100 something. Okay. We did that. It was too late for him to get the board that day so he came out the next day to install the board. But the unit still didn't come on. He said the thermostat was bad and it would we 300 to 500 to replace the thermostat depending on what we wanted. My husband told him we could do that ourselves. Just by pass it and get the unit working. Then he came down and said that the blower motor was out and it would be 1800 to replace the blower motor or 2400 to just replace the whole unit and then we'd be under warranty again. I told them I wanted a second opinion before we did that. I called Ed & Sons they came out, confirmed that we did need a new thermostat. And said they could rebuild the blower motor for around 100$. I ordered two new thermostats for 300 for both of them and my husband installed the thermostats. The work they did was fine. But I felt like they were more of the school of let's just replace parts until it works or we can sell them a new unit. Rather than what can we fix."

"I always like to write a review for service providers who will honestly tell you when you don't need the work done.  Sam gave us fantastic service -- and didn't make a cent!  He drove up from Bastrop -- which is pretty far away -- to look at a house where we were thinking of installing central A/C.  He explained all of our options to us -- the advantages and disadvantages of mini "split" ductless air conditioners, how we'd run the ductwork for a central A/C, how we could upgrade our window units to more powerful and energy-efficient window heat pumps, etc.  But because our house is difficult to adapt to central A/C (and because of the way we use our space) the best option for us was the beefed-up window units, which he doesn't handle.  Even so, he gave us great advice on what size and brand to buy.  All we need is a carpenter!Even though Sam didn't ultimately do the work for us, I could tell he'd be good to work with.  He was knowledgable, he gave our project a lot of thought and he carefully discussed the options with us. He's on speed-dial if we need A/C in the future."

Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

Yes, HVAC zoning systems offer energy savings by allowing precise temperature control in different zones in your home. Rather than conditioning the whole house uniformly, these systems direct airflow where needed, preventing energy waste. Tailoring comfort to specific areas reduces energy consumption and lowers utility costs, making HVAC zoning an energy-efficient choice.

The difference between a home surge protector and an HVAC surge protector is that an HVAC surge protector is designed to protect the components inside your HVAC unit while a home surge protector is installed near appliances and meant to protect your entire home. There are three tiers of whole-house surge protectors, and they are more expensive to install than HVAC surge protectors.

Yes, it’s normal for an AC to drip water. In fact, it’s part of the dehumidifying process that takes place inside your AC unit as the condensation trickles down into the drain pan. However, it isn’t normal for your AC to sound like it’s running water or have large puddles around it. If that happens, you can try the solutions listed above or call an AC repair pro.

Keeping your air filter clean is crucial for your heat pump's efficiency. As a general rule, you should check your air filter every 1 to 3 months. However, the actual frequency might vary depending on factors like the type of filter, indoor air quality, and the amount of dust and debris in your area. If you notice the filter is visibly dirty or clogged, it's a clear sign it needs attention sooner. Regular filter maintenance ensures proper airflow and helps your heat pump perform optimally, keeping your indoor air fresh and comfortable.

Your AC might not cool after a power outage because of a tripped circuit breaker, blown fuse, or damage to the compressor or capacitor. If you notice your AC not working after a power outage, in most cases, the breaker has tripped or the system has built-in brownout and blackout protection. Reboot the AC by turning it off at the thermostat, resetting the circuit breaker, and waiting 30 minutes to turn the AC on again.
