I do mobile repairs and the cost of interior parts has gone thru the roof and fixing the existing parts can make a lot of sense. I started repairing auto upholstery in DFW over 35 years ago. Not always—heavily worn or broken furniture often isn’t worth repairing or refinishing (if it’s even possible). While some damage can be repaired and some of the visual appeal restored, major flaws, such as structural issues, can’t be fixed as easily. If you still want a cost-saving furniture refinishing project rather than purchasing all new, consider shopping for similar secondhand pieces at thrift stores, garage sales, and estate sales.

Wood furniture gets sticky when dirt and grime accumulate on the surface. Sometimes, wax coatings and oils are the culprit, but other times, it’s a sign that the finish is failing, and no amount of cleaning your wood furniture will help. Varnish and lacquer can both get sticky as they age, and in this case, you’ll need to refinish the wood to stop the issue.

It's perfectly fine to just refinish the top of your table instead of all of it. In fact, that's what most people do. After all, why finish the bottom of the table that nobody ever sees? Of course, depending on how exposed the legs of your table are, you might at least consider refinishing them.

Wood stain does go bad, but it will last in the can for between three and six years, provided you use proper storage techniques. Storing wood stain in open containers or in extremely low or high temperatures will cause your wood stain to become unusable much more quickly. Water- and latex-based wood stains typically last for just two to four years, while oil-based wood stains can last for three to six years.

Wood stain remover should remove most, if not all, of that wood stain on its own. While sanding can be a great final step, especially if you’re planning to paint or restrain the wood, it isn’t always required. Following the first three steps of this process can leave you with beautiful results.
