To build a standard size, six-panel door yourself, you’ll need four 2-foot by 6-foot boards, one 2-foot by 8-foot or 2-foot by 10-foot board, and a sheet of 3/4-inch, paint-grade plywood. Instead of a bifold door, you might look into installing French doors, pocket doors, or sliding doors. Each has its own pros and cons. French doors offer the dual-door advantages that bifold doors do, and pocket doors are excellent space savers—though you’ll need to create a wall cavity to have them installed. 

The average fiberglass door that you purchase from your local door company or home improvement store will last around 20 to 40 years, so fiberglass doors are considered durable compared to other door materials. When properly maintained, it's not unheard of for a fiberglass door to last up to 80 years.
