"After talking to six other companies, I decided to give Elite Arborist a try. Carlos came out to give an estimate on laying new sod and redoing the stonework around a tree in my front yard. He was punctual and listened carefully to what I wanted. He told me all the things his company does and how they could make my vision a reality. We ended up agreeing to the work as well as pruning the large oak tree we have. On the day of the project, the sod was delivered 6:30 a.m. and the crew arrived an hour later. I was impressed how they put out orange cones around the area for neighbors’ visual safety. Carlos introduced me to the crew supervisor, Rocky. Throughout the day, Rocky kept me informed about what they were doing and progress. He patiently answered all my questions and reassured me that I would be pleased with the results. I was very impressed with the attention to detail to the stonework around the tree, the meticulous way they prepped to lay the sod and the expertise of tree pruning. They took great care in making sure they left may yard and surrounding areas, i.e., street very clean. By the end of the day, my front yard was transformed and had great curb appeal. Plus, the Oak tree really stands out. Carlos also sent me information on after care and fertilization of the sod. I’m very happy with the results. I paid a little more than I expected but it was well worth it. When it comes to landscaping professionals, Elite Arborist is the company you need. These guys are fantastic. They have a true passion for what they do and are very professional. I highly recommend this company. Their work is top notch."

"Shawn came out and gave us a quote then we hired them for next day service. The trees were trimmed along the roof line and they were done around three hours. Perfect. The crew came in a couple times to make sure everything looked OK and did touchups as we asked. No fuss, great job cleaned up all the trimmed branches as well! Totally recommend!"

"WOW! What a great group of professionals. We can really sing the praises of Pinckard Landscaping Service for the job they did on our front lawn and flowerbeds. We give them ten stars (on the five-star scale). We met initially with Sandy Rogers who was very helpful in outlining our ideas for a low maintenance, Texas heat tolerant plants for our flowerbeds. She made several great plant selections and had a book of pictures of the various plants in case we weren’t familiar with them. We also had a section of our front yard that needed to be cleared and covered with St. Augustine sod. During the sixteen years we’ve lived here, the front hedges and other plants have grown out of control and some serious removal work was needed. The bid was very reasonable for the amount of work involved. Sandy and her crew arrived right on schedule and began work immediately. Each member of the work crew knew exactly what they were to do and they worked very efficiently. Sandy was there to oversee the work and assure each plant was placed according to the plan. We were pleased she was on-site so that any questions or issues could be resolved immediately. Thanks to her advance planning, there were none. They cleared all the old plants, flowers and soil from our flowerbeds, then put in fresh, clean soil. Next, they rototilled the beds to assure a good mix of soil in the beds and a welcoming environment for the new plants to grow. The crew exhibited extreme care for the rest of the lawn by placing plywood planks over the grass for the wheelbarrows of dirt and mulch to follow. They also placed covers down for the mounds of dirt and mulch unloaded for the job. The crew was very careful to pick up any debris as they worked. After they finished the job, they had us run the sprinklers to be sure nothing had been disturbed during the project. They cleaned up everything and it looked perfect. Should we need more landscaping work done at a future date, Pinckard Landscaping will definitely be our first choice. Their knowledge, integrity and professionalism are stellar. "I cannot recommend this company enough. They all did fantastic work and were such a pleasure to work with. We did tree removal, new retaining walls, artificial turf, new sod, flowerbeds, river rock, new sprinklers, new fence, pool deck paint, and they reinstalled our existing deck railing that was about to fail (built by others). They turned a space we didn’t like into something we couldn’t be more proud of!!"

Arborists questions, answered by experts

For Bradford pears, damage from storms is common, and if the trunk splits, it can pose a danger to people and surrounding structures. The best thing to do in that instance is to have the tree removed. If there’s only minor damage to the branches, pruning away the damaged parts is the first order of business. You may also want to consult a professional arborist to make sure the tree is healthy.

The Christmas tree type that smells the best to you will ultimately depend on personal preference. But if that classic Christmas tree smell is important to you, choosing a type of tree known for its scent is a safe bet. Try a balsam fir for a spicy, comforting scent or a Douglas fir for a sweeter smell. You may also like Fraser firs, Scotch pines, and blue spruces.

While there is a lot of debate about whether boiling water is strong enough to kill tree roots, it is not best to remove the roots from large, old trees. You may be able to weaken young roots enough to remove them manually, but boiling water will likely not do the trick for large root systems.

Generally, homeowners do not need permission to cut down a tree on their own private property, but there are several exceptions where a permit may be required. You might need a permit if the tree is particularly large, old, or a protected species, such as a heritage tree. Trees located near public property or power lines can also be subject to special rules. Additionally, many local governments and homeowners associations (HOAs) have regulations controlling which trees can be removed to manage an area's appearance or prevent the spread of invasive species. To avoid hefty fines, it is crucial to check with your local government and HOA to determine if a permit is needed before you begin.

You can find pruning paints and sealants for trees, but you shouldn’t use them on a topped tree. Coatings like these often inhibit the tree’s healing process. An important exception is if there are dangerous fungi nearby that the tree is particularly vulnerable to, like oaks and oak wilt. Sealing cuts can help prevent fungi from taking root.
