"Alfredo [AJR Patios] is a consummate professional, and he (rightfully) takes great pride in the quality of his work. Alfredo is meticulously detailed, flexible and responsive to requests i made mid-construction, and he is very insightful regarding design possibilities. I would definitely hire him again for any future construction needs that may arise."

"Overall, this contractor was good with design but failed in execution. Based on good guidance and advice from Marcela, the materials and products selected make the bathroom look amazing however the overall execution of the project (workmanship, adherence to requirements, and project management oversight) were lacking and in some parts inadequate.

Regarding interior design and advising:
A vision is important but execution is just as crucial. Marcela is a gifted interior designer. She provided good suggestions for tile, color, and flow of the room. We relocated the tub and shower in the master bath. Also, she met with us often to discuss our materials, design, and other preliminary choices. It is unfortunate that she did not notate all of these selections and decisions and communicate them to her contractor. Also, during the execution of the remodel, she was mostly absent. We expected her to perform the duties of project manager for our remodel since she was our single point of contact to the execution of the remodel. As a result, Marcela's attention to key details throughout the remodel toward completion were lacking.
Regarding the execution of the remodel:
The contractors and people she works with to conduct execution are not competent and are unable to carry forth her vision for what needs to be done. The quality of the work was only good after regular quality control inspection by us. Things that were not to our satisfaction:
1. Tiles were not laid evenly on the floor
2. Trough drain we selected was installed not flush to the floor and the tiles are not continuous from floor through drain tile back to floor
3. Shower tray was elevated above what we expected
4. Tiling around tub was uneven and had about 1/3 inch of extra pop-out of tile on one portion
5. clean up of grout around glass tiles was sloppy with grout going everywhere
6. Tile on the half wall stuck out by 1/4 inch at the corners and was uneven showing very sloppy workmanship
7. Installation of tub was not framed properly.
70% of these issues were fixed upon inspection, However the remaining issues would require so much rework, that we will just live with it and try to be happy.

Based on what was delivered, the price we paid was not justified due to the lack of quality contracting, oversight, and workmanship of this remodel.

"I have worked with J&L for two separate rebuilds of my home and would absolutely recommend them. They are professional, prompt and courteous. The quality of the cabinets is excellent, as was the design."

Interior Design and Decorating questions, answered by experts

Mid-century modern design focused primarily on two things: simple, functional furniture, often with geometric shapes, and specific color palettes that included earth tones and what we’d today call retro colors. Furniture often blended different materials, like teak or oak wood, with vinyl, metal, and glass. Common mid-century modern paint colors included browns, reds, burnt oranges, yellows, aqua greens, and whites.

If you need help with your holiday decorating, the first step is determining your lighting and decor needs to narrow down your pro options. For example, if you want a custom outdoor light display with all of the bells and whistles, you’ll likely need to hire a local holiday light installer who specializes in that service. But if you only need to hang some lights inside in hard-to-reach places, consider hiring a handyperson or an interior decorator instead. It’s best to contact at least three different companies for quotes and to find out what services they offer.

Before hiring an interior designer, ask a few questions to better understand how they work, what’s expected of you, and what they promise to deliver.

  • How long will the project take to complete?

  • What type of services do you offer?

  • Can you provide a project estimate?

  • Do you work with subcontractors?

  • Are you licensed or certified in this state?

  • Do you have a portfolio of previous work I can review?

  • May I contact your customer references?

  • How do you handle change orders?

  • How do you handle payment?

While the terms 'interior designer' and 'interior decorator' are often used interchangeably, they represent distinct professions with some overlapping work. The primary difference lies in the scope of their projects.

An interior decorator focuses on the aesthetics of a space, making less permanent decisions about decor. Their work involves selecting colors, fabrics, furniture, wall art, paint, and other finishes to 'dress' a room and enhance its style.

An interior designer has a broader scope that includes a decorator's aesthetic focus but also extends to the structural and functional aspects of a space. Designers are qualified to plan layouts, make structural changes, and manage overall functionality. They handle permanent decisions regarding fixtures like cabinets and bathtubs, establish floor plans, and may hire contractors.

Due to the technical skills required, interior designers typically have formal education, certification, and may hold a license, which can result in higher fees. As a general rule, it is best to hire an interior designer for major remodeling projects and an interior decorator for projects focused on establishing or refreshing a home's interior style.

A hearth often looks like a tile or brick floor that juts out from and surrounds your fireplace. A hearth can be made of stone, brick, ceramic, or any other fireproof material. Brick offers a classic and traditional vibe, whereas a hearth made of marble or ceramic may lean more toward modern aesthetics. The most common depth of a hearth is 20 inches.
