"Walter and Glen at Protect Your Home Group with ADT are the best people to talk to in terms of security alarm. Being a locksmith myself I know how important it is to deal with the right people. I referred a lot of customers to them and so far they are happy with their service. I myself got one for my house. Thank you for a consistent service and great deal."

"The replacement went fine. The work was professional and at the agreed time. I was pleased with that. My only issue was with the charges. I had found the mechanism online priced at $108 (with $13 shipping). It would have arrived after my desired time frame, so I expected the locksmith would have a local resource from which to purchase at a wholesale price in a more timely manner. I expected that price to be about $60; certainly less than $100. However, I was told the locksmith paid $179! This didn't seem reasonable. Also, I did not receive an itemized receipt, only a total. After expecting to pay perhaps $150, I was actually charged almost TWICE that. So although I was happy with the work, I was certainly not happy with the price."

"After my son's car was stolen along with my house keys and garage remote, I contacted McCleary Lock & Access Control after-hours to have all of my locks re-keyed. Mr. McCleary gave OUTSTANDING service! He came immediately to do the work. He did NOT try to sell me new locks, but assured me the ones I had were great. I had been having difficulties with one lock, so he replaced that one. In addition, he reprogrammed my overhead garage door and all the remotes. He cleaned up after his work, was very kind and courteous. I was extremely pleased and surprised when he gave me his invoice--to the point that I questioned him if I didn't owe him more! I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND McCleary Lock & Access Control!"

"Marshall Motors works on later-model German and Japanese cars. I've used them since 1995, and they have maintained an Infiniti G20, a BMW 323i and a BMW 528i. A few years ago they were featured in a Dallas Morning News article on businesses that are perfectionists. Their shop is cleaner than many houses. Their prices are a bit less than a dealer's, and they employ only technicians with college-level training. January Marshall is the business manager and is herself a trained mechanic. Her brother Thom runs the shop. In many cases they will pick up and deliver your car if you live in the area. The work is always done right the first time, and they don't do unnecessary work."

Locksmiths questions, answered by experts

While lock crunching as a whole is not terribly common, it is one of the most frequently used means of forced entry into a home. Recent data suggests that forced entry through lock crunching or snapping occurs in more than 25% of burglaries.

The cost to hire a locksmith varies depending on the service you need. Consult your locksmith about the price of your requested services before hiring for your repair or installation. Some of the most common types of locksmith services include:

  • Installing deadbolts: $40–$75

  • Rekeying: $80–$160

  • Unlocking your house: $65–$180

  • Changing locks: $50–$200

  • Installing electronic locks: $50–$500

  • Installing smart locks: $200–$800

  • Keyless locks: $50–$300

If your door handle turns without opening, the most likely culprit is a loose or stripped spindle. This part connects the handles to the latch mechanism, and when it’s not properly engaged, turning the handle does nothing. Other issues might include a broken latch, loose screws, or even something small blocking an inner mechanism. In any case, it’s usually a matter of tightening, adjusting, or replacing a worn-out part inside the handle assembly—or calling in a professional to do it for you.

Newer, electric-powered door locks generally have a life span of five years or less. That’s thanks, in large part, to a phenomenon called planned obsolescence, in which products are programmed to need replacing after a certain amount of time. That’s also why older, manual, push-key locksets can last up to 30 years with regular cleanings and maintenance. When it does come time for a new set-up, know that the cost to change locks ranges from $130 to $500 on average.

Lock bumping is a technique locksmiths use to quickly and quietly open a pin tumbler lock, typically found in most types of deadbolts. It involves inserting a specially crafted key, or bump key, into the lock and tapping or "bumping" it with a mallet or similar tool. The force applied causes the lock's pins to jump momentarily, allowing the lock to be turned and opened. Unfortunately, thieves also use this technique to break into homes. Luckily, products like a deadbolt strap will fortify your lock.
