"Absolutely pleasant experience!! James came over and got up on the roof, did an inspection, told me what i had already knew. It was time for a new roof. We talked about different options and how to best fit my house within my budget. Out of the 3 contractors i messaged, he was the only one that made me feel confident. 1 told me "we only do insurance claims, not full out of pocket roofs"... another would only give me a bid over messages. The fact he actually came over showed me something!! He didn't pressure me into buying anything, didn't upsale me, just laid it all out on the table with different options to pay. Told me think about and call me youre ready. We made the call a couple days later!! Work wise... his crew got my house finished in 2 days. We're friendly when my family was around them. Did an excellent job both tear down and install. And..... they did an excellent job cleaning up the mess. Before my new roof when it storm really hard, i would have to walk around and inspect my ceiling for a new leak.... now... i don't even think about in the moment, cause i know James will come take off the roof if there is ever an issue.... thank you Dehart Roofing for making my home just a little bit more safer for my family 1000% would recommend"

"I dreaded contacting anyone to look at my garage roof. I was certain that all kinds of issue would be found and that the repair would be beyond my financial reach. To my surprise, the process was painless, the price was reasonable, and the job was completed on time, as promised. Thomas himself came on the next day to make certain the his crew had done clean up around the job (they had). It was a pleasure to work with such a considerate and pleasant professional. i recommend Thomas and Shield Contracting to anyone look for a new roof or roof repair."

"kevin and American Master Roofing were friendly and responsive throughout our roof replacement. They explained everything thoroughly and showed up right on time the day of the install. My neighbors all commented on the fast and thorough job American Master Roofing did. They even cleaned up ours and the neighbors yard before they left for the day. I would recommend them to anyone needing roof repairs or replacement."

Roofing questions, answered by experts

The level of underlayment’s water resistance will depend on the type of underlayment. The most popular underlayment, felt, is water-resistant, but it can’t withstand long direct exposure to rain or the elements.

Synthetic underlayment is more waterproof, but asphalt is the only fully waterproof type of underlayment.

DIY is not recommended due to safety and expertise requirements. Professional installation ensures proper alignment and sealing.

Tile and shingle roofs both have their pros and cons. In general, tile roofs are a larger upfront investment. In some cases, they can cost twice as much as shingles, but they last much longer and generally hold their value better than shingle roofs. Shingle roofs, on the other hand, are budget-friendly and quicker to install.

Furring strips (also called wood stripping) are not always necessary for a metal roof installation, but they are highly recommended and may be required by local building codes or the roofing manufacturer's specifications. There are several key reasons to use them:

  • Energy Efficiency: Furring strips, made of wood or metal, create an air gap between the metal panels and the roof deck. This acts as a thermal break, reducing heat transfer into your home and improving overall energy efficiency.

  • Moisture and Condensation Control: The air gap allows for better airflow, which helps prevent moisture buildup and condensation under the metal panels.

  • Structural Support: They provide a solid, even frame to which you can attach the metal roofing panels.

It is especially important to use furring strips when installing a metal roof over existing shingles. Without them, the roof surface can be uneven, and you will experience greater solar heat gain.

A roof's ability to handle snow depends on its strength and the snow's weight, as wet snow is much heavier than dry, fluffy snow. While designs in snowy regions often allow for 35 to 50 pounds per square foot, a general guideline is that a typical roof can withstand about four feet of fresh snow, two feet of packed snow, or just one inch of ice. Factors like the roof's age, slope, and support structure also affect its capacity; newer, sloped roofs generally hold more weight than older, flat ones. Ice and ice dams add significant, dangerous weight. Because capacity varies, it is best to contact a professional roofing contractor or the original builder to determine the maximum snow load for your specific home.
