"We didn’t realize how many items could be integrated into our ADT security system. But after speaking with the helpful representative on the phone for about 10 minutes, we decided to go forward with their full home automation package. Not only are the doors and windows secure, but we can control lights, the thermostat, and the garage door."

"Install was easy. Up front cost was pretty low with Angie's List coupon. Monthly price is a little high compared to competing companies. Response time with alarms is excellent. I was advised to use glass break alarms within 10 ft of my first floor windows, which we installed correctly. I asked prior to installation if having one in the kitchen would cause false alarms due to dishes clanging, etc. I was told the glass break alarms are configured to a precise frequency that alarms with breaking glass. So, not a "no", but not really an answer. Well, every time we cook dinner, wash dishes or empty the dish washer, the kitchen glass break alarm gives a warning which would sound the alarm if it was set. This has caused us a number of false alarms while we've been away due to shifting bowls or plates in our drying rack. For the first several we've had to pay our police department $120 to check the house, and I was only notified after the first alarm that there was a cheaper option for a security company to drive by to check for a break in."

"We just replaced our outdated and expensive security system with Smith Thompson Security. Our contacts with sales and support were friendly and helpful. The installation technician said our old system was usable and up-gradable to the new technology. We added cameras as well. The tech was knowledgeable, friendly and full of tips on using the system. Total monthly cost for this new improved security was about half of what we were paying out to the old national company. So far, we are very, very pleased with our choice."

"I found Point Security through alarm.com. I saw alarm.com commercials and wanted what they had to offer so I requested a call, and Travis was the first person to call me, in like 30 seconds after I submitted for a request. I like that right away because with an alarm company you need to know they have fast response time. He was so nice and helpful and explained everything to me, he knew what he was talking about and wasn't pushy at all. I told him I wanted to get a few other quotes and I'd let him know later. I spoke with 3-4 other companies and must have been blown away by Travis because no one compared. For the price and what I'd get, plus the quick response and friendly service made this an easy choice. I decided to look them up online and noticed the were on Angie's List, being a member I read reviews and decided to go with them. In the beginning I had quite a few problems with me AC. The day after they installed my AC went out. I freaked. They came back and what was happening was whatever was happening was over loading my system and flipping the breaker. The did something and then it happened again. I was getting really frustrated and thought I'd have to get rid of the system. They came back again, installed something to prevent that and i haven't had the problem again. I also had problems controlling the AC from my phone. They reset it and then put in another thing and it's been working great. They really know what they're doing there. And, the entire time Travis was friendly and not annoyed at all that I kept having problems. He made me feel like everything was going to be OK, and it has been! I love controlling my AC and alarm from my phone, it's awesome. i also feel at ease with the alarm. it went off one time because my fiance didn't tell me his dad went over, and he didn't know the code. Monitronics called within 30 seconds, pretty fast. Overall very happy with the service and system!"

"They gave us the best rate and the setup was great for ADT system. The installer did have to tell us about other options that would cost more money but he did not pressure us when we declined. We had door, window and motion detectors included. They gave us a week to practice on the new system, but we could call if we were ready to go live sooner which we did. Set up was quick, easy and uneventful. Very nice installer, Phillip Brown. The cost was quoted at a low price, but the bill came from ADT and was much higher. We were told the contract to ADT did not catch up and we will be getting the lower price with a reimbursement for the excess of the first bill. We did the $99 install and are getting a $100 gift card back. 3 year contract is a little annoying but we plan to stay here for a long time."

Security Doors questions, answered by experts

A security camera company will be able to advise you on where to position the cameras, ensure all of the equipment is set up properly, and do all of the installations. They’ll take factors into consideration that a non-professional might not automatically consider, like obstacles that could block a potential trespasser from the camera or how lighting may obstruct the view.

It depends on the type of sensor your home security system uses. If it’s a motion detector, any moving thing could set it off, from a roaming pet to a wind-blown curtain. Contact sensors would be triggered by the window being opened or moved. Also, be aware that any sensors placed too close to your vents could trigger false alarms whenever your heat or air conditioning is running.

You likely can reset your house alarm without the code, but it depends on many factors like how it’s wired and whether or not there’s a default reset code. Most companies make bypassing a security alarm without entering your code challenging to prevent burglars from simply resetting the alarm during a break-in. Your best bet is to contact your alarm company directly to get specialized support for your situation.

But, while you wait for support, you can disconnect it from the power source to stop the alarm from going off.

Yes, keyless locks can deter burglars, mostly because they boost security and offer advanced features. Most models allow for unique codes or temporary access, making it harder for intruders to break in. Many of these smart locks even alert you if someone tries to tamper with them. However, you need to remember that while they provide an added layer of protection, no lock is completely foolproof. Pairing these locks with good security habits—like proper lighting and surveillance cameras—creates a strong defense to help stop intruders in their tracks.

A study from the University of North Carolina found that security system signs were one of the top ten deterrents for burglars when choosing a target, so they do have some effect. However, you can get into legal trouble for putting up fake signage, so it’s best only to put up signs when you have the alarms to back them up.
