"We had just purchased our home and after a few days found that the septic system was having a problem - it smelled terribly. A septic contract was a required part of the purchase, however, after 2 months that company was making no headway in getting it fixed and we were unhappy and our neighbors were becoming annoyed with the smell too (understandably so.) We decided to try Total Septic upon recommendation of another neighbor. They were able to schedule our service for the next day. After a few minutes diagnostics, their technician felt confident he knew the issue and went to go get parts. That same afternoon, he replaced the air pump and verified aeration of the tank and explained it would take about 4-7 days to clear the smell. It did and we are extremely happy. I'm not the greatest fan of "star" ratings, but to explain my own below: 1) Work Quality 4.5/5, could it have been better (how it was mounted, setup, etc, yes, but for the price, I think they did a great job and anything more, probably would have required more time and more planning, nonetheless, those options weren't presented, so as close to a '5' as you can get. 2) Customer Service - Absolutely a '5' - Hands down excellent. They did not require a bunch of coordination or paperwork before coming out, they just made the appointment and fixed the problem asking for payment immediately after. We also chose to sign a support contract with them so we can continue to enjoy their excellent service. 3) Value for the money - I had priced replacement pumps and thought that was the problem, but I would be taking a gamble that my uneducated diagnosis from internet information was wrong. I received expert service and experience as well as same-day replacement for nearly the same price. In summary, I could not be happier with the service and people at Total Septic!"

"They were great. They repaired my old septic system and now it works great. They did the work during our very wet Spring and came back in the summer and smoothed it out and made it look good. I would recommend them for all your septic needs."

"Takes for ever to get a return a call. Also took a week to get someone out for repairs. They said they would reimburse me for septic repairs and it took over 3 months for that to happen."

Septic Tanks questions, answered by experts

The water refills in a well through gravity that draws water from the water table to fill the vertical hole. The pump brings the fresh water through a pressure tank and to the pipes in your house. The well continues to refill indefinitely as long as you don’t use more water than the well is producing.

There are a variety of different types of septic systems that can work in your home—such as conventional anaerobic systems, chamber systems, drip distribution systems and mound septic systems. All of them work using natural processes to break down solid waste and effectively treat wastewater without needing to be connected to a city sewer system. Which type of septic system you need will depend on characteristics of your property like how high the bedrock is or groundwater table is. Different types of systems come at different costs to install.

Trenches are typically 12 to 24 inches deep and 8 inches wide. However, the required depth depends on the specific project and local ordinances. For example, a French drain may need to be 18 inches deep, while a water pipe might require a depth of 24 inches and a drainage pipe 36 inches. Your city or county may have specific regulations, so it's wise to consult with an excavation professional to determine the correct depth for your project.

The size of your septic tank plays a role in determining the proper size of the drain or leach field. As a general rule, you should have 1 square foot of drain field size per gallon of septic tank capacity. However, you could install a leach field that’s as much as 2.5 square feet per gallon of septic tank capacity. Most professionals determine the right septic tank size and drain field size by the number of bedrooms in the house. A three-bedroom house needs a minimum 1,000-gallon septic tank, for example.

Beyond the type of well pump, there are a few other factors to consider when selecting a well pump. Keep in mind the depth of your well, your average water usage, and the PSI of your water-consuming appliances to determine the appropriate motor horsepower and size of your well pump.
