"We have used Southern Painting on various occasions over the last 20 years and would never consider using any other company - they specialize in residential painting and only use high-quality paint. When we moved to an existing home in McKinney, we planned everything with Christian and he walked us through everything and was great in his communication with us, before-during-after the job. William was the crew Supervisor and he and his crew painted the outside of our 1.5 story home. Additionally, they cleaned, sanded, primed, and painted the 350-foot wrought iron fence around our property. They were prompt, meticulous, providing detailed workmanship. I was home the entire 2-days, and they worked tirelessly in making sure everything was done with excellence. I always wait a few weeks before writing a review, and we are not surprised with the continued expertise and pleasure of working with Southern Painting. Different types of closets are defined mostly by size. A few different types of closets include:

  • A reach-in closet is a smaller closet that you can stand in front of and reach everything inside it. Aside from the size, the doors and the level of drywall finish are typically the largest price factors.  

  • A walk-in closet can be anything from a small 5-by-5 feet closet that has a narrow walkway with shelves on both sides to a 100 square foot bedroom-sized closet with shelving along the walls and plenty of room to move around in.

  • A built-in wardrobe often does not have a door and leaves the clothes and other contents open to the room, whereas a closet usually has a door to separate it from the rest of the room.

Custom closets cost around $2,100 on average, but you could pay anywhere from $500 up to $6,000 or more for your custom design. The scope of your design services will be the most significant factor, with standalone designs being the most affordable and design and construction services costing toward the higher end of the price range. Most closet design services include a closet and construction plan. 

  • Custom reach-in closet: $500–$1,500

  • Custom walk-in closet: $750–$5,000

  • High-end walk-in closet: $2,000–$5,000+

Bump-out additions can add some space to a closet without requiring any significant structural work. This entails pushing back the existing rear or side of the closet, simply moving the wall into either an adjacent room or unused space. For ground-floor closets, this could even be extended to the exterior of the home, but that has its own complications. Bump-outs are a good discussion to have with your contractor if you’re just looking to increase the space a little—not renovate the entire closet space.

When you are securing your DIY home office built-ins to the wall, you should start by locating the wall studs. You'll then want to use long screws to attach the cabinets, shelves, and bookcases directly to the wall studs. Your built-ins will be far too heavy to attach to the drywall alone by using anchors.
