It is a masterpiece, everyone who sees the closet is amazed and says it looks gorgeous and it has everything you ever need. It will be a huge selling point later on and we could not be any happier. "Rhonda and the entire team at Closet Envy were excellent throughout the process. Rhonda was patient and talked through all my questions as part of the design closet. She listened to our needs and offered suggestions on how we could make things better. She also has great expertise and always made herself available when I reached out to her. I am honestly amazed at how quickly she responds to messages. Her eye for design and attention to detail enabled us to have the closet of our dreams. I also got to work with Teresa who was extremely professional and apologetic given delay in some of the smaller items. Installers were awesome and hardworking even during the crazy Texas heat. Closet Envys professionalism and commitment to make things better or fix things despite some hiccups along the way showed that they cared about my experience. The value for money is unmatched given the alternatives in the market. Plus, Rhonda made it a lot of fun along the way. I would recommend them to everyone."

"Ivan and his team did a great job on my house. I got several quotes and theirs was by far the best price. I needed all the fascia and soffit repainted, some needed to be replaced. Chimney needed to be replaced and repainted. There was flashing that was loose between the windows and the bricks. The team worked well, and fast. I got several drops of paint onto my brick and front entrance, but it was minor. Overall great job."

Closets questions, answered by experts

On average, building a custom or built-in closet costs around $2,100. However, the total price can range from as little as $500 for a simple DIY project to $6,000 or more for a large, high-end custom closet. Most projects typically fall between $1,500 and $5,000.

The final cost depends on several factors, including the closet's size, type, materials, and features. Here is a general cost breakdown by closet type:

  • Reach-in closet: $500 to $1,500

  • Walk-in closet: $750 to $5,000

  • Wardrobe: $2,000 to $6,000 or more

Choosing a prefabricated closet system is generally less expensive than a fully custom build. The scope of design and construction services will also significantly impact the price.

You can design your own closet, but it’s usually better to hire a professional to do the work for you. Not only will you get years of design experience to guide you toward the right layout and material choices, but you’ll also only pay slightly more hiring a professional than you would creating your own plans and hiring a carpenter. A high-quality closet designer can provide insight into how to lay out your closet, and they may be able to find you a good deal on the carpentry or complete the work using an affordable, in-house team.

A foyer or entryway is typically a formal landing area for guests, located at the primary entrance of a home. It is often more formally decorated and connects directly to the main living space. In contrast, a mudroom is a more casual, utilitarian room, usually leading in from a secondary entrance like a garage or the side or rear of the house. It serves as a space for residents to remove shoes and outerwear to keep mud, dirt, and water out of the main home.

Different types of closets are defined mostly by size. A few different types of closets include:

  • A reach-in closet is a smaller closet that you can stand in front of and reach everything inside it. Aside from the size, the doors and the level of drywall finish are typically the largest price factors.

  • A walk-in closet can be anything from a small 5-by-5 feet closet that has a narrow walkway with shelves on both sides to a 100 square foot bedroom-sized closet with shelving along the walls and plenty of room to move around in.

  • A built-in wardrobe often does not have a door and leaves the clothes and other contents open to the room, whereas a closet usually has a door to separate it from the rest of the room.

You can budget a little less money for how to build a closet with wire shelves than with wood shelves. Some people don’t like the aesthetics that wire shelves provide, though, meaning they’ll gladly spend a little more to add wood shelves to the build. If you decide to buy pre-made wire shelves instead of building custom-sized wood shelves, you’ll be restricted in the closet shelving dimensions you can use.
