Late summer or early fall are two popular times to upgrade kitchen cabinets. With the holidays right around the corner, this gives you spillover time in case your renovation project takes longer than anticipated. Then you get to host and show off your new kitchen when company comes.

Standard 2x4 boards and plywood or particle boards are sturdy and cost-effective for making garage shelves, and pressure-treated 2x4s are best for any portion that will contact an unfinished concrete slab in the garage. You can create custom shelving with these materials or use standard sizes for fewer cuts. Plywood and 2x4s are easy to work with and cut with a standard miter saw. The natural wood offers a modern look and will hold up for decades.

To remove kitchen cabinets, you’ll need a drill, putty knife, utility knife, hammer, and pry bar. A saw may also be necessary to cut materials into smaller pieces. Wear work gloves and safety glasses for protection, and have a helper handy to support heavy cabinets as you remove them.

It’s not usually a problem, although you may want to check the specifics of your cabinets first. A wall of kitchen cabinets can support about 600 pounds, including what’s inside and anything resting on top. Keep that limit in mind when adding DIY shelves or décor to the tops of cabinets. If you are installing a new row of full cabinets, they’ll typically have their own support mechanisms and the added weight will be minimal.

For outdoor kitchen cabinets, choose wood that is naturally more weather-resistant. Teak, Brazilian walnut, white oak, and mahogany are all excellent choices. Avoid pine, cedar, and other softwoods, as they are more susceptible to damage and catch fire quickly. No matter what type of wood you choose, you’ll need to apply sealants, oils, and stains regularly to protect your cabinets from harm.
