"Got an initial pipe clearing completed with an estimate for other work if pipe clearing wasn't completed. Initial work was fine because it did not involve the owner. When it came to subsequent work however, Atomic's owner was pretty rude to me when I was attempting to clarify payment options for work estimated to cost over $2,000. House flooded overnight due to a potentially leaky pipe and it was unclear what the final bill would be if we chose to do the repairs. I told the owner that I might need a few days to move some funds around so that I could pay them properly. The owner told me it was a waste of time to talk to me if I cannot afford to pay them. This was despite the fact that he was informed I have a 3 year old. Even if you decline my business beyond the initial evaluation, you can treat my family with dignity and respect. I thought this was a very unprofessional way of doing business. Most families don't have that kind of cash accessible on a whim. I try to treat people with more respect than that. I will not use this company ever again, even for an estimate. I want to note however that the plumber who came out to the house from Atomic for the initial call/estimate was great. His name was Jon. Jon treated my wife and daughter with respect while explaining things well. The person who took the business's calls was also good. The owner's attitude and treatment of a client however was unacceptable."

"Scamming the elderly, you should be ashamed! We called them, explained we just needed the kitchen drain cleanout snaked unclogged, they quoted $115 an hour. We agreed. They said it would be an hour or less. It took maybe 30 minutes. I was fine with an hour minimum. When I was out of the room, they charged my elderly parents $215! Clearly took advantage of them. When I called they explained that the plumber had a helper and were charging for him too. Are you kidding?! I could have bought a snake and done it for my parents had I known they were going to scam them. This is not what was quoted or agreed to. We will be filing with the BBB and the Texas AG - it's actually illegal to treat people in their 70's on a fixed income this way, quoting them one thing and price gouging them after the fact. STAY AWAY."

Gas Leak Repair questions, answered by experts

Temporarily capping a gas line—for renovations or during travel—doesn’t require a permit. If you plan to remove a gas line and cap it completely, you’ll need to apply and pay for one through your town or city. Depending on your region and its local codes, you may pay between $25 and $100. To avoid a gas leak or other hazards, some cities take the job of permanently adjusting or capping a gas line out of the hands of homeowners. Instead, they require hiring a professional gas plumber.

All U.S. states require permits for gas grill installation, so you’ll have to get one before you move forward with your project. Permits help ensure that the gas line runs safely to avoid gas leaks and explosions. Gas line permits can usually also only be pulled by certified plumbers, which means you’ll have to hire a professional from the start. The permit for a gas line installation for a gas grill usually costs between $100 and $300. You can contact your installation company or building department for more accurate pricing.

Call 811 to locate and mark the gas lines at least three days before digging. In many areas, you can dig within 18 inches of the lines, though in some locations, the distance may be further. Check local regulations, as you may need a utility company representative onsite when digging. Document your calls to 811 and precautions taken to avoid gas lines. A homeowner can be held liable for hitting a gas line in some cases, but contacting the proper authorities and following all guidelines can offer protection.

In most cases, yes, it’s safe to light a gas water heater manually, but you should shut the gas off first, open a window, and let the space air out for about 10 minutes. Modern water heaters shut the gas off entirely if the pilot light goes out, but airing out the area beforehand is good practice and will ensure it’s safe to relight your pilot light manually. Just make sure you turn the gas valve to “pilot” before lighting. If the light keeps going out or won’t light at all, call in a professional.

Earthquake gas shut-off valves, or seismic gas shut-off valves, are safety devices that attach to your natural gas line. When an earthquake hits, the valve automatically turns off the flow of gas. Earthquake gas shut-off valves can prevent gas leaks, which are especially dangerous after a quake due to the risk of fire and explosion.
