Yes, in many cases, homeowners insurance covers the cost to repair or replace a fence. Home insurance policies typically protect your home and other structures on your property, which often includes fences. If the fence is damaged by a covered event, such as a storm, fire, or vandalism, your insurer may cover some or all of the cost. However, coverage does not extend to damage caused by natural wear and tear, owner negligence, insufficient maintenance, or improper installation.

You can use pressure-treated wood for a horizontal fence, but you’ll need to purchase a thicker and higher-quality variety to ensure it doesn’t sag or warp after you install it. Use #2 pine grade lumber and boards and thicker dimensional lumber, such as a two-by-six. You’ll also need to use stainless steel or hot-dipped galvanized fasteners, as the chemicals in the treated lumber will cause regular galvanized fasteners to rust. 

Ideally, when you replace a fence post, you should also replace the concrete footing. The concrete bonds to your new post, creating a secure base. If you install a new post into old concrete, it won’t be as sturdy.

That said, it is possible. Sometimes the post will lift right out of the concrete. If not, you can use a high-lift car jack to try and lift the pole out of the footing. Put the new post into the same hole and backfill it with fast-setting concrete. Keep in mind, this won’t work well for metal posts.

Galvanized metal, vinyl, and composite fences are known to be the longest-lasting options, often surviving for over 30 years with proper care. Metal fences, including galvanized chain link and aluminum, can look great for decades because the galvanization process adds a protective coating that resists weather and pests. Similarly, vinyl and composite materials are resistant to pests and can withstand harsh weather for many years. In comparison, a typical wood fence lasts about 15 years, and a standard vinyl fence has a lifespan of 20 to 30 years.

A fence post set in concrete lasts anywhere from five to over 25 years, depending on how well the concrete was applied and the fence post’s material. Untreated wood posts in concrete could last less than 10 years, but a durable, treated wood set in properly applied concrete could last a few decades. However, all fence posts will wear out eventually, so expect to need to replace your fence post every five to 15 years.
