"If I could give ACE Drywall and Acoustic more than 5 stars I would. The workmanship of Alex was exceptional! The repair of the cracked ceiling is PERFECT! Not only is Alex a true Craftsman in his field, he is also polite and professional. His extensive prep work kept all of the mess of plaster work contained. He cleaned up everything completely. His texturing of the plaster and the painting of the ceiling are so good that it's imperceptible where the the repair was done. My husband and I are delighted with Alex' work. To top it all off, the price was more than reasonable. We would definitely call ACE. Plaster and Acoustic again should any other needs arise. Our livinroom looks beautiful again. Thank you! "Thank God we found Celso and his crew at Austin lath and plaster. We've been meticulously restoring a 1910 farmhouse and German homestead in Blanco for two years. We're in the finishing stages and wanted the upper portion of the 10.5' walls veneered with plaster. Their worked plaster veneer finish is smooth as glass with just the right amount of subtle old school hand troweled character. I'm a tough restoration client to please and Celso's pleasant 4-6 man crew delivered a top notch plaster job in every room. They Used mega watt halogen side lighting to amplify every surface detail. Prep plastic covering was thorough and cleanup afterward superb. Pros all the way. We're very happy, as good as it gets"

"All the work done by Jaye Stark and his crews was excellent. In spite of the local heavy rains and flooding in May, he completed the work close to on time. Most important, where the heavy rains resulted in damage to some of the work he performed, Jaye came out quickly to repair the damage. I recommend him to anyone needed masonry work."

"They did the work a couple of months ago and I am still waiting on some parts that I messed up on to come in. They have been 100 percent. They were professional, on time and responsive. They actually went out of their way to help me out on some mistakes that I made. They are A+ all the way around. I would absolutely use them again."

Plaster Repair questions, answered by experts

Although they have similar applications, spackle and joint compound are not the same. Their primary differences lie in their composition, consistency, and ideal use cases.

Spackle is composed of gypsum and binding agents, making it thicker than joint compound. It dries quickly and is easy to sand, which makes it ideal for small wall repair projects like filling nail holes or patching minor damage.

Joint compound, also known as drywall mud, consists of limestone and gypsum. It is primarily used for large-scale projects, such as taping and finishing the seams on newly installed drywall. It tends to shrink more than spackle and can be more difficult to spread.

While both products can be used to fill small depressions and cracks, spackle cannot replace joint compound for taping and mudding new drywall. Conversely, you can often use joint compound for small patching jobs typically done with spackle.

Only use spackle on plaster walls when the imperfection is small. It’s best used for nail holes or small dings in the plaster. Spackle dries quickly, allowing you to continue the repair process shortly after using it. Plaster can be tricky to repair, though, so if you run into issues, call a pro so that you don’t risk further damage.

Look for flaking paint or air bubbles that burst and then flake away. Paint will begin to flake after being exposed to minimal moisture or water, so it’s a good indicator of any water damage. If you notice your paint starting to flake, feel the plaster underneath to see if it is soft or damp.

It’s not a good idea to plaster over broken plaster (unless by broken you’re referring to cracked, in which case that’s perfectly fine). However, broken plaster can be a sign of a larger underlying issue like foundation damage or severe damage to the lath holding up the plaster, so it’s worth investigating before you simply plaster on top of the damage.

Your walls are likely cracking due to fluctuations in the temperature outside. Drywall tends to expand and contract when temperatures and humidity levels change, and this repeated movement can lead to cracks in your walls, particularly around door frames. If you have multiple diagonal cracks, you may want to have your foundation inspected, as cracks can also be a sign of a bigger issue.
