"Thank God we found Celso and his crew at Austin lath and plaster. We've been meticulously restoring a 1910 farmhouse and German homestead in Blanco for two years. We're in the finishing stages and wanted the upper portion of the 10.5' walls veneered with plaster. Their worked plaster veneer finish is smooth as glass with just the right amount of subtle old school hand troweled character. I'm a tough restoration client to please and Celso's pleasant 4-6 man crew delivered a top notch plaster job in every room. They Used mega watt halogen side lighting to amplify every surface detail. Prep plastic covering was thorough and cleanup afterward superb. Pros all the way. We're very happy, as good as it gets"

"We recently had the pleasure of working with Emilio, and we couldn’t be more pleased with his service. He responded right away to our inquiry and came to us quickly. He gave us a reasonable price to build our gazebo and the work he did was top notch. Not only did he complete the gazebo, but he also was able to help build our tv console, which turned out great. Emilio does it all- whether it’s electrical work, building or general home handyman tasks, he has the skill to tackle any job with confidence. The next day we had an issue with our locks, and without hesitation, Emilio came back right away to fix it. His responsiveness, expertise and dedication to getting things done right are impressive. Emilio is respectful, trustworthy and truly cares about providing excellent service. We strongly recommend him to anyone needing services!"

"Overall we are very pleased and hope to recommend Ryan to others. He is very busy and I would like to feel a bit more personal service and not feel that he is rushed so much. That being said-he did what he said he (and his workers) would do in exactly the time he said he would do it in. Start Monday and finish Friday! Overall they showed up on time with just a bit of delay but nothing that stopped the progress. Not often that you can say that! As a realtor who works with the trades often, I can say this is special! In fact after all was complete and a few things needed a touch of work, Ryan came back while sick as a dog. Wish I had known he was ill as it could have waited. So - I feel he and crew are keepers!"

Plaster Repair questions, answered by experts

Plastering lasts for around 15 to 20 years without needing repairs or maintenance in most cases, and with proper upkeep, plastering can last a lifetime—sometimes more than 100 years. Plaster repair costs between $1 and $3 per square foot, and you may need these services once every 15 to 20 years or so unless you have a harsh climate where humidity changes are a constant issue. You can also opt to skim-coat plaster for between $0.90 and $1.30 per square foot, which may serve you better in the long run.

Yes, you can apply new plaster over an existing plaster surface, such as a wall or ceiling, provided the old plaster is in good condition. Before you begin, check the stability of the existing plaster. The surface must be clean, free of loose material, and have no peeling paint. It is also recommended to roughen the surface slightly to promote adhesion. For older plaster, applying a base coat like a PVA emulsion or a specific bonding agent or primer is crucial. This step makes the existing plaster less porous and ensures the new and old layers adhere properly for a smooth, long-lasting finish.

Although they have similar applications, spackle and joint compound are not the same. Their primary differences lie in their composition, consistency, and ideal use cases.

Spackle is composed of gypsum and binding agents, making it thicker than joint compound. It dries quickly and is easy to sand, which makes it ideal for small wall repair projects like filling nail holes or patching minor damage.

Joint compound, also known as drywall mud, consists of limestone and gypsum. It is primarily used for large-scale projects, such as taping and finishing the seams on newly installed drywall. It tends to shrink more than spackle and can be more difficult to spread.

While both products can be used to fill small depressions and cracks, spackle cannot replace joint compound for taping and mudding new drywall. Conversely, you can often use joint compound for small patching jobs typically done with spackle.

You can put certain types of plaster over other types, but doing so isn't always the best idea. For example, putting a coat of gypsum over lime plaster is possible, but doing so will limit the lime plaster's breathability and potentially affect its performance.

Since cement plaster tends to leave a textured surface, no matter how much you smooth it, some people prefer to use gypsum plaster as a topcoat over cement plaster, creating a smoother surface.

Plaster provides a durable, soundproof, and moisture-resistant finish compared to drywall.
