Yes, you need to use landscape fabric under your rubber mulch. Rubber mulch doesn’t decompose, so putting landscape fabric down can work as a barrier between your mulch and soil, preventing your mulch from mixing with your soil and leaching chemicals like aluminum, cadmium, and copper into it. Also, since weeds can occasionally get through rubber mulch, using landscape fabric as a second form of protection can increase its effectiveness. 

Yes, you can put soil on top of existing grass to level small areas. This is helpful for filling in small divots or leveling out minor dips in your yard that collect rainwater. However, this isn’t a good option if you need to regrade your entire lawn. It’s better to have a professional excavate some of the dirt first so that the level of the lawn doesn’t rise too high.

Artificial turf usually requires some sort of base. If you’re installing the grass over soil, you’ll want to add a weed barrier (weeds can damage your fake grass) and an artificial grass sub-base . Typically, this is a mixture of gravel and sand, like crushed miscellaneous base (CMB) or decomposed granite. If you're placing turf over concrete, you can skip the sub base and use a padded underlayment.

The best time to lay mulch depends on the type of mulch and the reason for installing it: 

  • Summer: Adding extra mulch helps soil retain moisture and keeps weeds at bay, allowing plants to thrive. 

  • Fall: Adding mulch helps control weeds and keeps soil and roots warm during the cooler months. Aim to add a layer of mulch 2 to 4 inches deep.

  • Winter: Mulch around perennial plants to help keep them insulated.

  • Spring: Wait until the ground has thawed. Depending on the thickness, add between 1 and 4 inches of mulch to provide freeze and rain protection and enrich the soil.
