Multiply the bed length by the bed width to get the area square footage.
Determine how deep you want the mulch to be, then divide the number of inches by 12 to get the measurement in feet.

Divide your total cubic footage by the number of cubic feet in one bag of mulch.
For example, a 4-by-8-foot rectangular bed is 32 square feet. If you want to install three inches (or 0.25 feet) of mulch, you would need eight cubic feet of mulch. To cover this area, you’d need four 2-cubic-foot bags or 2.66 3-cubic-foot bags of mulch.
To determine the amount of mulch you need for a round garden bed, you’ll need to measure the area’s radius first. Here’s how to do that.
Find the center of the bed, then measure the distance from that point to the edge of the bed.
Multiply that distance by itself, then multiply that number by pi (3.14) to get the total square footage.
Multiply the square footage by the mulch depth in feet to get the area’s cubic footage.
Divide this number by the size of your mulch bags.
For example, if the distance from the center to the edge of the bed is 2 feet, you’d first multiply it by itself to get 4. Then, you’d multiply 4 by 3.14 to get 12.56 square feet. With a mulch depth of 0.25 feet, your area would measure 3.14 cubic feet and require just over one 3-cubic-foot bag of mulch or just over one and a half 2-cubic-foot bags.
If your garden bed is neither rectangular nor round, you can still measure for mulch, although you may end up with slightly more than you need. Here’s how to measure this type of bed.
Measure the widest parts of the bed in two directions and multiply them to get a rough estimate of the square footage.
Multiply this number by the mulch depth in feet.
Divide by the size of a bag of mulch to determine the number you need.
For example, your garden bed might measure 10 feet by 12 feet at the widest parts for a total area size of 120 square feet. If you want to install three inches of mulch, you’d multiply 120 by 0.25 to get 30 cubic feet. That would equal 10 3-cubic-foot bags of mulch or 15 2-cubic-foot bags of mulch.
