"Mike's landscaping recently did a complete re-landscape of our front and back yard. Project Manager Angie was the best! They did exceptional work, had competitive pricing, arrived on time every day, cleaned up their work area each day, were attentive to our needs and just very pleasant to work with. We were extremely pleased with the finished product, would not hesitate to use them again, and can whole-heartedly recommend them to anyone needing these services."

"We purchased the $45 consultation visit and Alvin came out and listened to what we wanted done. He came back a few days later with a price based on an itemized plant / materials list. We worked with him on a few changes and agreed to the work. His team came out and the crew was extremely professional and knew what they were doing. They salvaged many of the original plants in our yard and transplanted them to better areas. The new work they did was phenomenal and our house went from being an eye-sore to the best landscaped yard on the block!"

"Randy and his team has done an awesome job . Initially I hired him for replacing my front yard grass patches . By observing the amount of detail and care he has given in the initial project, I rehired him for my front yard landscaping . He is an artist in landscaping and gives the utmost attention to the detail. He is very honest in his quote and followed a good schedule to finish work . I will re hire him for my future projects."

"Backyard Buddy did an incredible job on our garden design, landscaping, and gutter installation. They completely transformed our yard into a beautiful, clean, and welcoming space. The garden layout was thoughtfully designed, and the landscaping work was done with great attention to detail. The gutter installation was just as impressive — everything was installed professionally and works perfectly. The crew was hardworking, respectful, and made sure everything was cleaned up before leaving. Communication was great from beginning to end, pricing was fair, and the quality of work exceeded our expectations. You can tell they truly care about their customers and take pride in what they do. I would absolutely recommend Backyard Buddy to anyone looking to upgrade their outdoor space!"

Landscaping questions, answered by experts

A half inch above ground level is ideal for metal edging. This provides enough depth for the edging to hold in place and enough height to keep in most landscaping materials (like mulch or gravel). If you install edging too high off the ground, it will stand out from your landscaping and pose a tripping risk. If you install it too low, your ground cover won’t stay in place.

How much 4 yards of dirt will cover depends on how deep you want the soil to be. In general, a yard of dirt will cover 324 square feet for a 1-inch depth or 100 square feet for a 3-inch depth. Therefore, you can expect 4 yards to cover between 400 and 1,296 square feet if you keep your soil depth between 1 and 3 inches.

Unless it only rains once in a blue moon where you live, you’re going to want water-loving plants in your garden bed or pot. A few ideas for plants that aren’t super fast-growing (meaning they’re good in pots or near foundations) and can handle a lot of standing water include:

  • Acorus (Sweet flag)

  • Colocasia esculenta (Taro or elephant ear): In many climates, these are annuals, making them less desirable because you need to adjust the chain again after each replant.

  • Equisetum scirpoides (Dwarf horsetail rush): non-dwarf varieties of horsetail are fast growers and can take over quickly.

  • Juncus effusus (Curly rush)

  • Osmunda regalis (Royal fern): Royal fern can grow quickly but can also handle being crowded, making them good container plants.

Many people have used old tires in gardens as raised beds, planters, tree rings, and DIY decor. However, these uses are not recommended due to the toxicity of many of the chemicals used to manufacture tires. These chemicals can leach into the soil and water as the tire breaks down, creating environmental pollution and health hazards for gardeners and their families.

Environmental considerations include native plant selection, wildlife habitation, erosion prevention measures, and managing water runoff patterns to protect the lakefront ecosystem.
