Customers say: Terrific value

"I high recommend Mat and his crew. The remodeled my whole house, TWICE, because of flooding twice in 5 months. He went far and above what was expected in every way. He was very particular about his work and did a perfect job at everything. He's an honest, hardworking man and if I could give him a 10 STAR, I would."

"All went well with my recent experience with Raul and the rest of the Blue Ribbon crew. I was aware of other work he had done in my neighborhood, along with the positive recommendations I've seen here and elsewhere. We set up a date for an estimate, and all went well. I decided to go ahead with the work, and we set an appointment that was good for both of us. Excellent communication in verifying the appointment and asking if we had any concerns. Everyone showed up on the appropriate date, despite the lousy weather. Work commenced without incident, and was done in three days, as predicted by Raul. I'm very happy with the finished results, and will definitely use Blue Ribbon in the future for my painting projects. Thanks !"

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Yes, you must thoroughly clean your deck before staining. If you don't, dirt, debris, grease, and mildew can get trapped between the wood and the new stain. This not only looks unsightly but also prevents the stain from penetrating the wood properly, reducing its ability to protect the deck from weather and UV rays. As a result, the stain won't last as long or look as good. Any existing mold or mildew left untreated can continue to grow beneath the new stain, potentially leading to wood rot and structural damage. Always wait at least 48 hours after cleaning for the wood to dry completely before applying stain.

Painted decks typically require a new coat about once every ten years. In between new coats, it's best to maintain your deck by regularly removing debris, washing it down with non-abrasive cleaners, and staying ahead of structural issues, such as loose boards and rotting wood. In some cases, painting a small section of your deck affected by damage or the sun can lower your costs and workload.

If you don’t treat a cedar fence, it will turn from reddish brown to gray over time. You can keep the cedar from graying and retain its attractive, deep red color by sealing your cedar fence with a stain that keeps the wood’s oils in and serves as a barrier against the sun’s UV rays.

It is definitely worth sanding a deck to ensure the wood absorbs new stain. Sanding a deck removes the outer layers of aging wood, allowing the stain to penetrate. It also gives a fresh look to the entire surface as part of the deck refinishing process. Without sanding, your stain or sealant is less likely to absorb into the wood. While sanding a deck is a time-intensive project, the rewards are noticeable and long-lasting.

Wood stain does go bad, but it will last in the can for between three and six years, provided you use proper storage techniques. Storing wood stain in open containers or in extremely low or high temperatures will cause your wood stain to become unusable much more quickly. Water- and latex-based wood stains typically last for just two to four years, while oil-based wood stains can last for three to six years.
