"I had a water heater with a bad leak. Called Scenic City Plumbing at 8am, they had an estimator out before 10am, then the plumbers were here before noon, with a new water heater, and completed the installation by early afternoon. They were very professional and did a great job on with the installation. I could not asked for better service. I highly recommend Scenic City Plumbing."

"The owner Derrick is articulate and doesn't try to hard-sell you. I found him to be forthcoming in discussing the pros and cons of tankless versus tank-style water heaters. I ended up buying a new tank water heater and his guys installed it professionally. They also replaced my worn-out pressure regulator valve for a fair price in a very cramped crawl space. They did such good work that I went ahead and let them install a new kitchen faucet that I had planned to replace myself. It turned out to be complicated so I'm glad I let them do the work and feel like the price I paid was more than fair. I now consider Riverside Plumbing to be my new plumber."

"Starting with the initial phone call, the company did a good job.  They set up an appointment for the next day, let me know when the plumber would arrive, and informed me they would charge $75/hr. from the time the plumber left the shop until he arrived back to the shop after finishing the job. The plumber left the shop at 8:00 am and arrived at my home at exactly 8:45 am (45 min. travel time).  He finished everything, including totaling the bill, by 2:30 pm.  I figured another 45 min. for the trip back and came up with 7.25 hours, but I got charged for a full 8 hours. I didn't argue the point - he had done a really good job and I was just happy to have it done. However, I was quite surprised to see an additional $35 service call charge that I had not been made aware of.  Also, they charged me $250 for parts, which I thought was quite steep. That being said, I will say the job was done very well. The plumber, David, was very knowledgeable and polite. I am extremely pleased with his work and would definitely use him again when I need a plumber.

Plumbing questions, answered by experts

The first rule of plumbing is nothing but water, toilet paper, number one, and number two go down the drain.

To prevent clogs, get yourself:

  • A compast pail where you can clean plates, drain grease, and toss scraps and paper towels.

  • Drain screens for the shower, tub, and bathroom sink to stop hair, jewelry, toys, etc. from going down the drain.

  • Trash cans for everything that shouldn’t go down the drain, like dental floss, hygiene products, and cat litter.

P.S.: If you do drop your priceless ring down the drain, take a deep breath, and then follow these steps to retrieve jewelry from your drain.

There are three main types of shower valves: pressure-balancing, thermostatic, and diverter. Pressure-balancing and thermostatic valves are both considered mixing valves because they regulate water flow and temperature, but they do so in different ways. A pressure-balancing valve senses changes in water pressure, such as from a flushing toilet, and adjusts the incoming hot and cold water to maintain a consistent temperature; these typically use a single knob. A thermostatic valve uses a thermostat to precisely control the water temperature and requires a separate control to adjust the water volume. A diverter valve directs the flow of water from one fixture to another, such as switching from a tub faucet to a showerhead in a tub-shower combination.

Rough-in plumbing can take anywhere from three to five days for a pro to complete. The exact time to complete this job depends on several factors, such as the size of your home, the number of plumbing fixtures, and how accessible the plumbing system is. If any complex plumbing problems come up during the process, it might extend the length of your project.

A toilet flapper will remain open when the chain that it is connected to is too short. The chain should lift the flapper just enough to allow it to open the rest of the way on its own. The chain should have just about half an inch of slack.

Toilets typically connect to your main vent stack, a vertical pipe that runs through all finished levels of your home and exits through the roof. It’s located behind the walls, but if you have an unfinished basement or a utility closet, you may find a portion of it running the vertical length of the space. Some basement toilets use an air admittance valve instead, which is a small vent located in the wall directly behind the toilet that extends upward a few feet from the drain.
