"Lesson learned. Always get an estimate. BEFORE the work is done. At least a digital copy. Arrangements for the project were made, with some one named Lynn, for the company to send someone to complete the work. We were quoted over the phone 4500-5000 which included a mold test. A sub contractor with an entirely different company (National Mold Company) was sent. When the contractor arrived, he stated that the job would be much more simpler than first thought. This led us to believe that the job would cost less, no. All said and done, they charged $5500. All said and done, it's almost like no work was done. The stains and the smell are still there. Only one actual board was taken upon the attic room. The ceiling in the bedroom was primed and painted but are still visible and have a funky smell. At this point I'm going to. Do what we should have done; Do the job ourselves. Just now with $5500 less dollars in our pockets. A detailed receipt was not given even though it was requested."

Paul Davis Restoration has served Middle Tennessee for over 22 years specializing in home repair and restorations due to water calamities, flooding, fire and storm damage. Emergency services include water removal and dry-out, roof tarps and roof repairs and replacement, and cleaning and deodorization of clothing and furniture due to smoke/fire events. We are on-call 24 hours a day/7 days a week and prepared to handle any emergency that a homeowner may encounter. In addition, as a licensed, general contractor in the state of Tennessee, we offer a complete array of home improvement and home remodeling services. We are family-owned and operated and have built our business by offering our clients exceptional quality with an element of integrity second-to-none.

"I have never dealt with a worse contractor than Paul Davis Restoration. After a tree fell on our house on May 6, 2021, I decided to use them based on State Farm's recommendation. They gave me the name of the man who would be the project manager. I never met him, he never once came out to our house to look at the damage, and he made no effort to contact me, except to send me a work authorization. I paid half of the estimate ($10,018.33) on June 24, 2021. I did not hear anything from the project manager all July or August. I finally got in touch with the office, and they sent a roofer to look at the damage. He said he couldn't do anything until the framing work was done. I tried contacting the project manager to see when a framing crew was going to get started, and after several attempts, he said the roofer was responsible for that. The roofer finally did get a crew, and he basically became the project manager. At this point, I asked the roofer what I was paying Paul Davis for, and he couldn't give me an answer. I had to hire and pay a metalworker myself ($6,375) to replace the patio railing the tree destroyed. I had to hire a pest controller ($1,078) to remove raccoons that had infested our ceiling. They were able to get in, because Paul Davis Restoration took so long to begin work, and there was an opening in the facia. Almost five months after the tree fell, the job was finally completed. In late September, I paid the balance of the work authorization ($10,018.33). On October 5, the Paul Davis Restoration office called me to say they would be sending me a Completion of Service document for me to sign. More than three months later (January 18, 2022), I received an email asking me to sign it, and it included an invoice for an extra $7,198.84. I never once received an itemized list of expenses, so I had no idea why I would still owe $7200. Eight months later, on September 16, 2022, I finally received an itemized expense report. How can a contractor underestimate the cost of a job by over $7000? I suppose it’s possible if he doesn’t visit the job site one single time."

Lead Testing and Removal questions, answered by experts

Through air sampling devices and surface swabs in key areas of concern.

A professional indoor air quality inspection takes anywhere from one to three hours, depending on the size of your home and the number of necessary samples. After the test, the specialist will discuss the findings, but you won’t get a full written report for 2 to 10 days, though you can ask your pro to expedite the process, if needed.

A DIY kit can lessen the sting that comes with paying for a professional assessment, but these comprehensive tests are true lifesavers. Inspectors are more likely to catch all of the pollutants and hazards in your air. Plus, you’ll still need a professional to verify and act on your DIY test results.

Some kits don’t include tests for certain air pollutants or only detect their presence, but not their levels (i.e., mold spores). If you’re willing to shell out money for a DIY kit, it’s usually better to stretch your budget slightly higher for a more detailed assessment.

The average cost of a lead paint inspection is about $600, but it can cost as low as $150 or as much as $800, depending on the size of the area, geographic location, and the inspection methods. Some of the most common lead paint inspection methods include:

  • Visual inspection: $150–$400

  • Paint sampling: $200–$600

  • X-ray fluorescence (XRF): $250–$700

  • Risk assessment: $300–$800

Hiring a professional for mold and toxic material testing ensures precise identification of harmful substances within a home. Professionals utilize specialized equipment and techniques, providing accurate results that inform proper removal strategies, safeguarding occupant health.
