Small jobs welcome

"Chris and his partner did quite a bit of masonry on our outside and the work was excellent, he also looked for additional spots that needed repair. Chris is an excellent communicator and kept me informed from the time we set the original date until the work was completed. I would hire miller masonry without question, i wish they performed other types of home repairs. Thanks for the great experience."

"We were hit by the recent tornadoes which took most of the west side of our house off. Despite high demand for masons these days Augusto was able to swing by and offer a bid the next day after initial contact and start work within two days. Their workmanship is excellent, priced competitively and they left the place very clean, even taking more debris with them than just from the crushed masonry."

"The cover to our patio looks great, but ... to install the three posts. they needed to cut into the existing stone patio. After the cover was installed, they did an inadequate job replacing the stones around two of the three posts. I went to the office to pay for the work, told them of this problem, and they told me to send photos and they would get it addressed. I've sent photos (twice), but they have ignored my requests. Lesson learned: don't pay until you are completely satisfied."

"These folks are all for saving a tree if at all possible (which was what I wanted). We've already recommended them to someone we know that is interested in having some of his trees cut down. They are attentive and fair with their pricing!!! I highly recommend them!!!! Melinda A. Antioch"

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Unexpected expenses during masonry work often stem from local soil conditions. Franklin sits on karst limestone and clay-heavy soils, which expand and contract. This requires extra excavation and stabilization. You will also encounter additional fees for required permits and inspections. Furthermore, inadequate drainage infrastructure often becomes apparent mid-project, requiring you to add weep holes or regrading to protect your home.

Helpful?

Watch out for contractors who omit required permits for your masonry work or refuse to conduct an in-person site assessment. Because TN features variable soil conditions, professionals must inspect your property before quoting. You should also reject quotes from unlicensed crews lacking a physical local presence. Finally, avoid professionals who fail to specify the exact mortar type, as improper materials cause severe long-term brick damage.

Helpful?

A frequent mistake during masonry work is applying modern, hard mortar to older, pre-1950s brick. This traps moisture and causes the softer historic brick to crack. Homeowners in Franklin also frequently overlook proper drainage planning, leading to premature retaining wall failure. Additionally, scheduling projects during late fall or winter exposes fresh mortar to freeze-thaw cycles, which guarantees premature failure if left unprotected.

Helpful?

You can safely clear debris from weep holes and gently brush away white salt deposits using a dry, stiff brush. However, avoid pressure washing older brick. You must hire a professional for complex masonry work, such as repairing chimney cracks or applying sealants. In Franklin, improper sealants trap moisture and destroy historic brick. Call an expert immediately if you spot cracks in a retaining wall.

Helpful?

You have several excellent sustainable options for masonry work. Reclaimed brick reduces manufacturing demand and perfectly suits historic properties. You can also utilize lime-based mortars, which feature a lower carbon footprint and remain fully recyclable. For new construction, insulated concrete masonry units deliver outstanding thermal performance for the TN climate. Finally, permeable pavers help manage stormwater runoff while reducing impervious surfaces around your property.
